Abu 'Abs was the chief/senior companion of the Ansar who followed the great Badr War and all the wars after that until his death. Abu 'Abs's wife was named Umm 'Isa bint Maslamah bin Salamah bin Khalid bin 'Adiy bin Majda'ah bin Haritsah, including her sister Muhammad bin Maslamah and including women who pledged allegiance to Rasulullahﷺ. From his wife, she gave birth to two children named Muhammad and Mahmud.
Rasulullahﷺ made Abu 'Abs a brother of Khunais bin Hudzafah al-Sahmiy who had married Hafsah bint Umar bin Khattab before Hafshah was married to Rasulullahﷺ and came from the Muhajirin group.
The Role of Abu 'Abs in Islam and Hadith
Abu 'Abs was one of the people who could write Arabic before he converted to Islam. He and Abu Burdah bin Niyar (his uncle al-Baro bin 'Azib) destroyed the statues of the Bani Harithah when they both converted to Islam. Sayyidina Umar and Uthman appointed Abu 'Abs as an officer who collected zakat from livestock and as a conveyer of the truth to humans. The descendants of Abu 'Abs spread to Medina and Baghdad.
Abu 'Abs narrated a hadith from Rasulullahﷺ. Those who narrated the hadith from Abu 'Abs were his sons Zaid bin Abi 'Abs bin Jabr, 'Abayah bin Rifa'ah bin Rofi' bin Khodij, and his grandson Abu 'Abs whose name was Abu 'Abs bin Muhammad bin Abu 'Abs bin Jabr .
Hadiths narrated by Abu 'Absرضي الله عنه are found in Sahih al-Bukhari (only one history, hadith number 907), Sunan al-Tirmidhi and Sunan al-Nasai. The name Abu 'Absرضي الله عنه is listed in three hadiths in Sahih al-Bukhari, namely 1) kitab al-Jum'at chapter al-Masyyi ila al-Jum'ah hadith number 907., 2) kitab al-Jihad wa al-Sayr chapter Man Ighbarrot Qodamahu fi Sabilillah hadith number 2811., and 3) chapter Qotl Ka'b bin al-Asyraf hadith number 4037. Abu 'Abs was also one of the friends who killed Ka'b bin al-Asyaraf.
Abu 'Absرضي الله عنه died in 34 H at the age of 70 years, and his grave was in Baqi' Medina. It seems that the name Abu 'Absرضي الله عنه is very foreign to our ears, even though he was a great friend who was famous in his time and among the ulama. Maybe it's because of our ignorance and how little we have read the biographies of our friends that we don't know them yet. Hopefully, with this article, we can get to know the companions of Rasulullah ﷺ better.
