Huwaithib bin Abdul Uzza رضي الله عنه

Seeing the Angels at the Battle of Badr.

Huwaithib bin Abdul Uzza رضي الله عنه was one of the leaders of Quraysh. When participating in the Battle of Badr on the part of the polytheists, in fact, he had seen an i'tibar how a thousand troops who were armed and more fully equipped were defeated by 313 Muslims with makeshift weapons and supplies, even only two people riding horses.

At that time he saw a picture of how an angel moving between the heavens and the earth flashed to attack, catch and captivate his friends, so it occurred to his heart, "That man (Rasulullah) is a man who is protected ...!"

Huwaithib bin Abdul Uzza رضي الله عنه did not tell anyone about what he saw, but it was a shame because it did not open his heart to embrace Islam either.

Even until the completion of the Hudaibiyah agreement, in which more and more Quraysh people followed Islam, both ordinary people, and their figures, he had not been moved to follow in their footsteps.

When Rasulullah and his companions carried out Umrah Qadhiyyah (umrah qadha'), a replacement pilgrimage because when the Hudaibiyah agreement failed/obstructed, a year after the Hudaibiyah agreement, Huwaithib bin Abdul Uzza together with Suhail bin Amr were assigned to expel Rasulullah and the Muslims from Makkah when the time was up.

After three days had passed according to the time given by the Quraysh, Huwaithib bin Abdul Uzza  and Suhail met Rasulullah  and said, "The time that is your condition has finished, then get out of our country...!"

Rasulullah  said to Bilal to announce to other Muslims, "O Bilal, no one should come with us to Makkah, who is still here before sunset."

The victory of Rasulullahﷺ and the Muslims during Fathul Makkah frightened Huwaithib bin Abdul Uzza, he evacuated his family to various places he considered safe.

When he was in the gardens of Bani Auf, he met Abu Dzar al Ghiffary رضي الله عنهHuwaithib bin Abdul Uzza tried to run, but Abu Dzar called him gently and asked him how he was.

Between the two of them, there was indeed intimacy and affection, and because of that he did not hesitate to approach Abu Dzar رضي الله عنهand expressed his fear that he would be killed. He also said that his family had been evacuated for their safety.

Responding to his concern, Abu Dzar رضي الله عنه said that in fact he and the other residents of Makkah were safe with the guarantee of safety from Allah SWT, as Rasulullahﷺ said when entering the city of Makkah.

Abu Dharr also requested that he gather his family again and return to his home, and he agreed. While escorting Huwaithib bin Abdul Uzza and his family, Abu Dzar رضي الله عنه kept shouting, "Indeed, Huwaithib bin Abdul Uzza has been guaranteed safety, so no one should ignite anger at him..."

After arriving at Huwaithib's house, Abu Dzar al Ghiffary رضي الله immediately left. But a few moments later he came back again and said that if he met Rasulullah and told him what he had done, and Rasulullah justified his actions, Huwaithib felt calm.

Abu Dzar al Ghiffary رضي الله said to him, “O Abu Muhammad, how long will you stay like this? You have missed many wars, therefore you have missed many good things.

Meet Rasulullahﷺ and enter Islam, you will surely be safe. In fact, he is the best human being, the most gentle, and the most connecting relationship among them. His glory is your glory, his height is your height.”

Huwaithib reflected on his life's journey while opposing the Prophet Muhammad, and his treatment so far, especially after obtaining the great victory at Fathul Makkah. Finally, Huwaithib bin Abdul Uzza رضي الله عنه 's heart was moved by Abu Dzar's suggestion, and he asked to be taken to meet Rasulullah.

They both found Rasulullah with Abu Bakr in Bathha '. Huwaithib conveyed his greetings as taught by Abu Dzar, he answered his greetings, and he made a creed declaring his Islam.

Rasulullah was very grateful and happy for the guidance of Allah who brought him to embrace Islam. When Rasulullahﷺ prepared troops because of the threat of attack from several Arab tribes who allied themselves in the Hunain War, he borrowed money from Huwaithib bin Abdul Uzza رضي الله عنه to finance the troops, and he lent as much as forty thousand dirhams.

He accompanied Rasulullah in the wars of Taif and Hunain, and after the end of the Hunain war, he returned Huwaithib's money and gave him a Ghanimah of one hundred camels.

Hadith Narrated by Huwaithib bin Abdul Uzza,

Sunan al-Nasa'i - Collection 1 - No. 2466

“From Saib bin Buraidah that Huwaithib bin Abdul Uzza رضي الله عنه informed him that Abdullah ibn As Sa'dy informed him that during the time of Umar's caliphate, when he came to meet Saiyidina Umar Al Khattab رضي الله عنهSaiyidina Umar Al Khattab رضي الله عنه  said to him: "I was told that if you help people, then if you being rewarded as an amil, you reject it." Abdullah replied: "True." Saiyidina Umar Al Khattab رضي الله عنه said: "Then what do you expect from it?"

He replied: "In fact, I have horses and slaves who are many and my condition is very good, I want my charity as my alms for the Muslims." Saiyidina Umar Al Khattab رضي الله عنه  said to him; "Don't do that, in the past I also wanted what you wanted, namely when Rasulullah gave me a share of alms, so I said to him: "Give alms to people who need it more than me." So he said: "And the alms are given you don't expect and don't ask for, take it and keep it or give it in charity, while what isn't given to you, then don't hope for it."

Nasai Hadith Number 2560

"Having informed us ['Amr bin Mansur] and [Ishaq bin Mansur] from [Al Hakam bin Nafi'], he said; had told us [Syu'aib] from [Az Zuhri], he said; had informed me [As Saib bin Yazid] that [Huwaithib bin Abdul 'Uzza] had informed him [Abdullah bin As Sa'di] had informed him that he had come to Saiyidina Umar Al Khattab رضي الله عنه during his caliphate, then [Umar] said; Is it true that the news reached me, that you take care of some human work, then if you are given money, then you don't want it. He said; then I say; "Yes". Saiyidina Umar Al Khattab رضي الله عنه   asked; "What do you want by doing that?"

So I say; "I have several horses, as well as several slaves and I am in good condition. I want my practice to be alms to Muslims. So Saiyidina Umar Al Khattab رضي الله عنه said to him; "Don't do that, in fact, I never wanted what you wanted. In the past, Rasulullahﷺ gave my gifts and then I said; give them to someone who needs it more than me. Until he once gave me treasure, then I said; give it to someone who needs it more than me. So Rasulullah said: "Take then develop and give alms, what comes to you from this treasure while you are not greedy and don't ask for it, take it and what isn't like that, don't indulge yourself."
