Al-Bara' ibn Azib Al Ansari

Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه (Arabic: البراء بن عازب الانصاري; died 690) was one of the companions of the Prophet ﷺ and narrator of hadith.[1]
He embraced Islam at a young age and fought alongside the Prophet ﷺ in fifteen battles, including the Battle of Khaybar, from which he reported the hadith [2] In 645, during the caliphate of Saiyidia Uthman, رضي الله عنه he was appointed governor of al-Ray (in Persia ). ). Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه finally retired to Kūfā and there he died in 690.

Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه reported the hadith hadith kolam Khum[4] and also figures in the transmission of many hadiths in Muslim and Bukhārī collections.

When Saiyidina Umar Ibn Al Khattab رضي الله عنه was in the house of Saidatuna Fatimah Az Zahra رضي الله عنه,[5] al-Bara was in it.

Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه was one of the companions who faithfully accompanied the Prophet ﷺ in the early days of preaching. Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه is known as a noble companion. He is also a hadith expert who narrated hundreds of hadiths.

Encapsulating the Youth Defenders of Rasulullah ﷺ Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه was a companion of Rasulullah ﷺ who was born in the second year of prophethood and converted to Islam at a young age.

The father named Azib was also a friend of the Prophet ﷺ. Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه was born and grew up in the middle of a good Muslim family.

Learned from the Prophet ﷺ
Rasulullah ﷺ migrated to Madinah with some companions and Muslims, including Al Barra. Wherever the Prophet ﷺ went, Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه always accompanied and accompanied.

He learned a lot about the Qur'an and hadith through the Prophet ﷺ directly. Because he often met the Prophet ﷺ, Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه was able to narrate many hadiths. Recorded, he is able to narrate as many as 305 hadiths.

Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه grew to be a noble companion as well as a great figure at that time. Despite being close to Rasulullah ﷺ, Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه is known as a companion who has a sense of humility and because of the great respect he has for this leader of the Muslim community.

Once, the respect and humility of Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه towards the Prophet ﷺ, he said:
"I once wanted to ask Rasulullah ﷺ something, but I delayed it for two years out of respect for him."

Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه had sustainable knowledge, but he always guarded his attitude when faced with other scholars. It is very careful to give opinions or fatwas.

Abu Minhal رضي الله عنه said, "I asked Zaid ibn Arqam رضي الله عنه and Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه about the means of change. Whenever I asked one of them, he always replied, 'Just ask on the other, because he is better and knows more than I."

One day, someone asked Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه about the meaning of surah Al Baqarah verse 195: "And do not cast (yourself) into destruction with your own hands." What does this verse mean is the person who faces the enemy, then he attacks until he is killed? Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه answered, "No. But, he is a person who commits a sin and says, 'Allah will not forgive me."

Following the Battle:
In addition to narrating many hadiths, Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه was also involved in several wars in defense of Islam. One day Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه volunteered to join the war, at that time he was still very young. The war he wants to follow is the Badr War in 2 Hijri.

Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه together with other teenagers, such as Abdullah bin Umar رضي الله عنه, Zaid bin Tsabitرضي الله عنه and others, submitted to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to be allowed to join the war.  Rasulullah ﷺ then allowed some of them and some others were not allowed. Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه is one of those who did not get permission because his age was considered too young.

But then, he followed the Khandaq War and other wars. History records that Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه fought with the Prophet ﷺ 15 times and traveled 18 times.

In the book Islamic War Commanders by Rizem Aizid, Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه is described as a brave soldier and warlord in the face of the enemy on the battlefield. His bravery has even been shown since his very young age.

Explanation of Hadith Al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib al-Anṣārī رضي الله عنه about Death – Part 1 .
Study Summary: Explanation of the Hadith of Al-Bara' bin 'Azib about Death (Part 1)
In the hadith narrated by the companion of Al-Bara' bin 'Azib, may God be pleased with him, in which he said:

"We once set out with the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, to accompany the body of someone from the Anshor tribe, and we arrived at the cemetery before the grave was dug. So he sat down, and we sat around him (with great wisdom) until it was as if there was a bird perched quietly on our heads, while his hand carried a branch that he hit on the ground. He then raised his head and said: "Ask God for protection from the torment of the grave! (he said it two or three times).

Then he said again: "Indeed, a believing servant, when he has left this world and gone to the afterlife, then a group of angels descend from the sky with white faces, as if their faces were the sun. They brought a shroud and perfume from heaven, until they all sat by his side (of which there were many) as far as the eye could see. Then the angel of death -alaihissalam- came and sat by his head and said: "O good soul, come out to receive God's forgiveness and pleasure..."

Then the spirit flowed out, like a drop of water flowing from the mouth of a kirbat (skin water container), then the angel of death took it...

When he had taken it, the other angels did not let it remain in his hand even for a moment, they immediately took it and put it in the shroud and the perfume, so that the spirit smelled like the most fragrant perfume on earth...

The angel then brought the spirit up, until they did not pass a flock of angels but they wondered: "Whose spirit is this fragrance"?... The angels (who brought the spirit) answered: "This is the spirit of A, the son of B, and they say it with the best pronunciation that people use when in the world. (In this way), until they reached the world's sky, they asked for it to be opened, and it was opened immediately... Then each guardian of the sky, escorted them to the next sky until they reached the seventh sky... Then Allah azza wajall said: "Write down the record of the servant -my in 'illiyyin and return them to the earth, because from it I created them, and into it I return them, and from it I will raise them again.

Then the spirit was returned to his body, then two angels came and sat him down, and asked: "Who is your Lord?". He replied: "My God is Allah".

Both asked again: "What is your religion?". He replied: "My religion is Islam".

Both of them asked again: "Who is the man who was sent to you?". He replied: "He is the messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace."

Both of them asked again: "What knowledge did you learn?". He replied: "I read the book, I believe in it, and I approve of it".

Then a caller from the sky said: "My servant is true, so spread the expanse of heaven, clothe him with the clothes of heaven, and open for him the door to heaven!"... Then came to him a gentle breeze and the fragrance of heaven, his grave was spread as far as the eye could see.

Then he was approached by a man with a handsome face, beautiful clothes, and a fragrant fragrance... The man told him: "Rejoice with the news that makes you happy, this is the day that was promised to you!"

The servant asked: “Who are you? Your face is a face that brings goodness". He replied: "I am your righteous deed".

The servant then said: "Oh my God, hasten the doomsday so that I can return with my family and property!".

Check out the complete explanation of the discussion on this contemplation of death in the recording of the study delivered by Ustadz Arman Amri, Lc. the following. Hopefully useful.

HADIS AL-BARA’ BIN AZIB TENTANG AZAB KUBUR

"We went out with the Prophet ﷺ carrying the body of an Ansar man until we reached the cemetery. While waiting for the body to be put in the grave, the Prophet ﷺ sat (facing the Qibla) and we also sat around him as if there was a bird on our heads. In his hand was a stick with which he poked the ground. He looked at the sky and then looked down at the ground. He looked up and then down three times. Then he said:

"Take refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave" (two or three times).

Then he said:

"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave" (three times).

Then he said:

"Indeed, a servant who believes when his worldly life is about to end and his afterlife begins, angels whose faces are as white as the sun descend upon him. They came with kapan cloth from heaven and the fragrance of the corpse of Heaven. They then sat in front of the person as far as the eye could see. Then came the Angel of Death, peace and blessings be upon him, and sat on his head while saying: "O good soul (in another narration: calm soul), come out to God's forgiveness and pleasure.

Then the spirit came out flowing like a drop of water from the spout of a water container and the Angel of Death took it.

Dalam riwayat lain:

Until the spirit came out, all the angels between heaven and earth and all the angels in the sky prayed to him, and the gates of heaven were opened for him. There are no guardians of those doors but they pray to God for the spirit to rise from their direction (door).

When he (the Angel of Death) took the spirit, the other angels did not let it go even for a moment until they took it and put it in the linen cloth and the perfume.

That is the word of Allah ﷻ:

He is the Omnipotent over His slaves. He sendeth guardians over you until, when death cometh unto one of you, Our messengers receive him, and they neglect not.
 M. Pickthall”
[Al-Quran, al-An’aam, ayat 61]

He came out of there smelling of the most fragrant musk that exists on the face of the earth. They went up with the spirit and every time they passed a group of angels, they would say, "Whose good spirit is this?" The angel who brought answered "This is So-and-so son of So-and-so." Said his best name that he used to be called when in the world. Until they arrived in the sky of the world and they asked for the door to be opened for the spirit they brought. The door was opened for them. The spirit will be accompanied by all the inhabitants of that sky until it reaches the next sky, until it reaches the seventh sky.
So God said: "Write this book of My servant in Illiyyin."

Ah, what will convey unto thee what 'Illiyin is! -A written record, Attested by those who are brought near (unto their Lord).

— M. Pickthall

 [Al-Quran, al-Mutaffifin, 19-21]

So his book was written in Illiyyin and it was said: Return him to the earth, because I promised them that I created them from him, to him I return them and from him I will raise them again.

Then he was returned to earth and his soul was put back into his body. He heard the footsteps of his friends' shoes as they left his grave.

After that, two rude angels came forward and sat him down while saying "Who is your god?"

He replied "My God is Allah."

They asked again "What is your religion?"

He replied "My religion is Islam."

They asked again "Who is the person sent for you?"

He replied, "He is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."

Ask them again "What is your practice?"

He answered, "I read the Book of God, believe in it, and justify it."

They snapped at him asking who is your god, what is your religion and who is your prophet.

That is the last fitnah (test) faced by a believer and that is what Allah said:

Allah confirmeth those who believe by a firm saying in the life of the world and in the Hereafter, and Allah sendeth wrong-doers astray. And Allah doeth what He will.

 M. Pickthall.”

[Al-Quran, Ibrahim, ayat 27]

Until he was able to answer "My God is Allah, my religion is Islam and my Prophet Muhammad ﷺ."

Then a voice was heard calling from the sky saying "My servant has spoken the truth, so spread his mattress from Heaven, dress him in the clothes of Heaven and open for him the door to Heaven!" So that he can smell the fragrance of Heaven and expand his grave as far as the eye can see.

Then came a man with a nice face, nice clothes, and a good smell who said

"Be happy with what makes you happy. This is the day that was promised to you.”

He said to him “Who are you? Your face is a face that brings goodness."

The person replied "I am your good deed. By God, I do not know about you except that you are quick to carry out God's orders and slow to disobey God, then God will reward you with goodness."

Then one of the gates of Heaven and one of the gates of Hell was opened for him, then it was said "This is your place if you disobeyed Allah but Allah has replaced it with this one." When he saw what was in Heaven he said "My Lord, hasten the Day of Resurrection, so that I can return to my family and my property." It was said to him "Calm down."

The Prophet ﷺ then said:

Whereas if the dead person is a disbeliever when his worldly life is about to end and his afterlife begins, harsh and cruel angels will come to him. They are black-faced and they bring with them clothes from Hell. They sat in front of the infidel as far as the eye could see. Then came the Angel of Death sitting on his head and said

"O ugly soul, come out to the wrath and hatred of God.

Then his spirit came out of the body and was caught like a lot of fibrous coir from wet sheep's wool so much sweat and veins were severed with him.

He was then cursed by all the angels between heaven and earth and every angel in heaven. The gates of heaven are closed to him. There is no door but its guardian will pray to God that the spirit does not rise past them.

When he (the Angel of Death) took the soul, the other angels did not let it go even for a moment until they took it and put it in the infernal garment. At that moment came out of him the smell of the most rotten carrion that ever existed on the face of the earth. They took him up and every time they passed a group of angels they would say, "Whose spirit is this ugly?" They answered "So-and-so son of So-and-so." Mentioned the ugliest name ever given to him while in the world. Until finally they arrived in the sky of the world and they asked that the door be opened for the spirit they brought but it was not allowed.

Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited the words of Allah ﷻ:

Lo! they who deny Our revelations and scorn them, for them the gates of heaven will nor be opened not will they enter the Garden until the camel goeth through the needle's eye. Thus do We requite the guilty."

 M. Pickthall.”

[Al-Quran, al-A’raaf, ayat 40]

Allah Azzawajal then said "Write this book of My servant in Sijjin in the lowest belly of the earth!"

Then it was said "Return him to the earth, because I promised them that I created them from him, to him I return them and from him I will raise them again."

Then the spirit was thrown from the sky until it hit his body. Then he recited the words of God:

"Turning unto Allah (only), not ascribing partners unto Him; for whoso ascribeth partners unto Allah, it is as if he had fallen from the sky and the birds had snatched him or the wind had blown him to a far-off place."

 M. Pickthall."

[Al-Quran, al-Hajj, ayat 31]

Then the spirit returned to his body and he heard the footsteps of his friends' shoes as they turned away from his grave.

Further, he was approached by two harsh angels who immediately snapped and sat him down, then said "Who is your Lord?"

He replied “Aah..aah… I don't know.”

The angel asked again "What is your religion?"

He replied "Aah.. aah... I don't know."

The angel asked again "What do you think about this person sent to you?"

He couldn't find out his name.

So it was said to him "Muhammad!"

He replied “Aah.. aah… I don't know. I just hear people say something and then I say the same thing.”

Then it was said "You really don't know and don't read."

After that a call was heard from the sky saying, "He is lying! Spread out for him a mattress from hell and open the gates of hell towards him.”

So at that moment he felt the heat of the heat and was narrowed for his grave until his joints were crossed.

Then, a man who looked ugly, dressed badly, and smelled bad came to him. He said to him, "Listen to the news that will make you worse; this is the day that was promised to you."

He said "Who are you?"

The person replied “I am your bad deed. By God, I do not know except that you are slow in obeying God but quick in disobeying God. Then God will give you a bad reward."

Then there was brought to him a mute, deaf person with an iron whip in his hand! If a mountain is hit with it, it will crumble to the ground. The man then hit him with a blow until he was ground. Then he was reinstated as before and beaten again. He screamed with a scream that would be heard by all creatures except jinn and humans. Then the gates of hell were opened for him and he said "My Lord, do not bring the Day of Judgment."

[Authentic. Narration of Abu Daud]
