رضي الله عنه Yasir ibn ‘Amir al ‘Ansi .

Yasir bin Amir رضي الله عنه - Companion of Rasulullah who fell under the torture of Quraysh.

Yasir bin Amir رضي الله عنه was one of the companions of  Rasulullahﷺ converted to Islam in the early days of Rasulullah 's preaching so he was included in As-Sabiqun Al-Awwalun (First Muslims/first generation). Yasir was a friend who fell in difficult times with his age which is no longer young, Yasir suffered enough due to the torture and cruelty of Quraish.

Ibnu Sa'ad wrote in Thabaqat al-Kubra that Yasir bin Amir رضي الله عنه was not a native of Makkah. Yasir is an immigrant from Yemen. Yasir bin Amir رضي الله عنه came to Makkah to find his lost brother.

It is said that Yasir bin Amir رضي الله عنه along with two other brothers named Malik and Harits traveled from Yemen to Makkah. But when they arrived in Makkah, it turned out that the three brothers could not find the whereabouts of their brother and did not get enough information to continue their journey. Finally, they decided to return to Yemen. When Malik and Harits decided to go home, it turned out that Yasir bin Amir رضي الله عنه changed his mind. Yasir bin Amir رضي الله عنه wants to stay in Makkah because he has felt comfortable living in Makkah.

To settle, as an immigrant Yasir bin Amir رضي الله عنه must obey the rules in Makkah. Yasir bin Amir رضي الله عنه had to pledge allegiance to a large tribe so that his wealth and soul could be guaranteed. Ibn Sa'ad wrote that Yasir bin Amir رضي الله عنه pledged allegiance to Abu Hudzaifah, the chief of the Makhzum tribe, and joined him.

Abu Hudzaifah then married Yasir bin Amir رضي الله عنه to his slave girl named Sumayyah رضي الله عنه. Not long after Sumayyah رضي الله عنه was freed by Abu Hudzaifah. From the couple, Yasir and Sumayyah were born Ammar رضي الله عنه, one of the companions who persistently fought for Islam. According to the rules of slavery in force at that time, Ammar رضي الله عنه automatically became the slave of Abu Hudzaifah, although in the end Ammar رضي الله عنه was freed by Abu Hudzaifah. They remained with Abu Hudhayfah until he died. Allahﷻ sent Muhammad Rasulullah ,His Messenger with Islam. Yasir, Sumayyah, ‘Ammar, and his brother ‘Abdullah ibn Yasir all embraced the faith. He, his son, and his wife were all subjected to persecution and torture. The following verse was revealed concerning them:

وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يَشْرِى نَفْسَهُ ٱبْتِغَآءَ مَرْضَاتِ ٱللَّهِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ رَءُوفٌۢ بِٱلْعِبَادِ ٢٠٧

And of mankind is he who would sell himself, seeking the pleasure of Allah; and Allah hath compassion on (His) bondmen.
(Surah Al Baqarah 207)

 (Tafsit of M. Pickthall}

Sayyidina ‘Ammar رضي الله عنه was Sayyidah Umm Salamah’s (the wife of Rasulullah) foster brother.

Glad tidings of his entry into Jannat will shortly come in the biography of his wife Sayyidah Sumayyah bint Khubbat رضي الله عنه.

The Time Yasir bin Amir رضي الله عنه embraced Islam;

In the book al-Kamil fi al-Tarikh, Ibnu al-Khatsir noted that the Yasir family converted to Islam in the 5th year of the Prophethood (Rasulullah). It is most likely that Yasir bin Amir رضي الله عنه was the last to declare conversion to Islam compared to Ammar and Sumayyah in the family. This is following Ibnu Hajar al-Asqalani's record in the book al-Ishabah fi Tamyiz al-Shahabah, who wrote that Ammar رضي الله عنه and Sumayyah رضي الله عنه. were among the first seven people to convert to Islam, Ammar the Sixth and Sumayyah the seventh. Whereas Yasir, in Ibnu Hajar's count, was in the thirties.

The Yasir family's Islam is very expensive for the Bani Makhzum tribe. Because they were former slaves of Bani Makhzum, it can be said that they were tortured indiscriminately by Bani Makhzum officials. Among the harshest against this family is Abu Jahl, Abu Hudzaifah's cousin.

The Quraish carried out investigations against the Muslims according to the situation and conditions. If these people are noble and influential, they face threats and bluffs. And after that, they launched a very intense war of nerves on him.

And if the believer is from among the people of Makkah who are low in dignity and the poor, or from the group of slaves, then they will be abused and lit with a flaming fire.

So the Yasir family belongs to this second group. And the question of their torture was handed over to Bani Makhzum. Every day Yasir, Sumayyah, and Ammar were taken to the desert of Makkah which was so hot, then abused with various punishments and torments.

Sumayyah's suffering and experience from this torture are horrible and terrifying, but Sumayyah has shown a tough attitude and stance, which from the beginning to the end has proven to humanity a glory that never fades and an honor that never fades.

Fall in Defending Faith A Death Of Legacy.

It is generally assumed that Yasir was also killed in the persecution.

The first victims of pagan attrition and aggression were those Muslims who had no tribal affiliation in Makkah. Yasir and his wife, Sumayya, and their son, Ammar, had no tribal affiliation. In Makkah they were "foreigners" and there was no one to protect them. All three were savagely tortured by Abu Jahl and the other infidels. Sumayya, Yasir's wife, died while she was being tortured.

Sumayyah رضي الله عنه. thus became the First Martyr in Islam. A little later, her husband, Yasir, was also tortured to death, and he became the 'Second Martyr in Islam'.

Quraysh had stained their hands with innocent blood! In the roster of martyrs,

Sumayyah رضي الله عنه. and her husband, Yasir bin Amir رضي الله عنه , rank among the highest. They were killed for no reason other than their devotion to Allahﷻ and their love for Islam and Muhammad Mustafa.

Those Muslims who were killed in the battles of Badr and Uhud, had an army to defend and to support them. But

Yasir bin Amir رضي الله عنه and his wife had no one to defend them; they bore no arms, and they were the most defenseless of all the martyrs of Islam. By sacrificing their lives, they highlighted the truth of Islam, and they built strength into its structure. They made the tradition of sacrifice and martyrdom an integral part of the ethos of Islam.

— Razwy (2001).

Abu Jahl tortured Yasir's family with various tortures to get them to leave Islam. The Bani Makhzum officials also tortured the Yasir bin Amir رضي الله عنه family. Various physical and mental tortures did not bother the two couples Yasir and Sumayyah even though they were very old.

Yasir bin Amir رضي الله عنه eventually lost his life due to severe and continuous torture.

The  Yasir bin Amir رضي الله عنه the family remained on the side of Muhammad's teachings. Sumayyah fell as a witness to the truth he believed. She is the first woman to bear the title of martyrdom in Islam. Followed by her husband, Yasir as the first man to be martyred.

While Ammar, the first child still struggles to bear the torture. He still managed to bear the torment no matter how painful it was. But he is still human. In fact, the torture he received exceeded the limits of humanity, until unconsciously Ammar uttered words of disbelief to escape the torture he suffered.

He was really saddened by that speech, even though in his heart he still fully believed in the truth of Islam. At that moment the truth of Allahﷻ came down the verse;,
"Whoever disbelieves in Allah after he believes (he earns the wrath of Allah), except for the one who is forced to disbelieve while his heart remains calm in a state of faith (he is not a sinner)."
(QS. An-Nahl: 106).

Rasulullahﷺ always visited places he knew to be torture arenas for the Yasir family. At that time he had nothing to resist danger and defend himself.

When traced from the records of Ibnu al-Atsir in al-Kamil fi al-Tarikh related to the age of Ammar bin Yasir when he died in 37 H at the age of 94, it can be calculated that Ammar was 44 years old when  Rasulullahﷺ was a prophet. If Yasir is linked for example 20 years or 30 years with Ammar's age, it can be said that at that time Yasir bin Amir was around 60-70 years old or even more. Wallahu A'lam.
