Mistah bin Usasah’sرضي الله عنه.

Mistah bin Usasahرضي الله عنه.

Mistah(ra) bin Usasah’s name was Auf, and his title was Mistahرضي الله عنه.. His mother was  Umme Mistah Salma bint Sakhr, who was the daughter of Raitah bint Sakhr, the maternal aunt of Sayidina Abu Bakar رضي الله عنه.

Mistah bin Usasahرضي الله عنه. migrated to Makkah along with  Ubaidah bin Harithرضي الله عنه. and his two brothers,  Tufail bin Harith and Hussainرضي الله عنه. bin Harith. Prior to undertaking the journey, it was mutually agreed that they would meet at the valley of Naajeh. However, Mistah bin Usasahرضي الله عنه. remained behind because he was bitten by a snake during the journey. The following day, when those people who had already left, came to know about the incident of the snake bite, they went back and then accompanied him to Madinah. While in Madinah, they all stayed at the house of Abdur Rahman bin Salamahرضي الله عنه.

Bond of Brotherhood, Participation in Battles and Demise

Rasulullah established a bond of brotherhood between  Mistah bin Usasahرضي الله عنه. and  Zaid bin Muzayyanرضي الله عنه..  Mistah رضي الله عنه. accompanied Rasulullah in all the battles, including the Battle of Badr.

Eight months after the Migration, Rasulullah sent  Ubaidah bin Harithرضي الله عنه. with a cavalry consisting of sixty or, according to one report, eighty horsemen. Rasulullah had a white flag made for  Ubaidah bin Harithرضي الله عنه., which was held by  Mistah bin Usasah رضي الله عنه.. The purpose of this expedition was to stop the trade caravan of the Quraish in its tracks. Abu Sufyan was the leader of the caravan of the Quraish. According to some narrations, this caravan was headed by Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl; the name Miqraz bin Hafs has also been reported.

This caravan consisted of 200 people who were transporting trade goods. The party of the Companions رضي الله عنه. caught up with the caravan at the Valley of Raabigh, which was also known as Wudaan. This caravan was not only a trading caravan but was also laden with weapons. Moreover, the profits of the trade by this caravan were to be used to wage a war against Muslims. From the events it is proven that they were fully prepared for this.

Nonetheless, when the parties arrived there, no battle took place between them except the exchange of arrows, nor were there any proper lines formed for combat. This incident has previously been mentioned whilst relating to the account of another companion. The companion who shot the first arrow from the Muslims was Saad bin Abi Waqasرضي الله عنه.. This was the first arrow to have been shot on behalf of Islam. At that occasion, Miqdad bin Aswadرضي الله عنه. and  Uyainah bin Ghazwanرضي الله عنه. (according to Sirat Ibn Hisham and Tarikh al-Tabari it was Utbah bin Ghazwan) broke free from the party of the idolaters and joined the Muslims, as they had already accepted Islam and desired to join the Muslims.

This was the second expedition in the history of Islam sent under the leadership of Ubaidah bin Harithرضي الله عنه.. After the exchange of arrows, both parties receded (this incident has also been mentioned in one of the previous sermons). The idolaters were in such awe of the Muslims that they assumed that Muslims had a very large army at their disposal to support them. Hence, they went back in fear and the Muslims did not pursue them any further.

This was because their intention was not to initiate a war, rather, it was to stop them and warn them that if they were to make preparations to fight against the Muslims, then the Muslims would also be ready.

During the battle of Khayber, Rasulullah) gave wheat weighing 50 wasq [a unit of weight] to  Mistah bin Usasah رضي الله عنه and Ibn Ilyas;

(in those days, it was customary to give this from the spoils of war and this is all mentioned in Al-Tabaqat-ul-Kubra).

He passed away at the age of 56, in the 34 AH, during the Khilafat of Uthmanضي الله عنه.. It is also reported that he was alive even during the Khilafat of Saiyidina  Ali رضي الله عنه. and that he participated in the Battle of Siffin alongside Saiyidina  Ali Ibn Abu Talib.رضي الله عنه.

Since the Muslims returned from the battle of Bani al-Mustaliq, the hypocrites began to spread slander against Saidatuna Aisyahرضي الله عنه. These slanders became the subject of discussion and the topic of conversation in every gathering in the city of Madinah.

Although the majority of sincere Muslims believe in Saidatuna Aisyahرضي الله عنه innocent, they kept quiet and waited for certainty from Rasulullah. At that time, Rasulullah was also waiting for the revelation of the truth from Allah.

The hypocrites led by Abdullah bin Ubayy actively spread slander and lies against Saidatuna Aisyahرضي الله عنه. to confuse and weaken the spirit of Muslims in the city of Madinah.

Unfortunately, little by little Muslims began to believe the slanders of the hypocrites. They also started actively spreading slanderous rumors against Saidatuna Aisyahرضي الله عنه

Among them is Mistah bin Usasah رضي الله عنه.. cousin of Sayidina Abu Bakar رضي الله عنه. He was a poor man, who was always helped by Sayidina Abu Bakar رضي الله عنه.

Since Mistah bin Usasah رضي الله عنه had a good reputation and was among those involved in the Badr war, many Muslims began to believe him. So, at that moment, Allah sent down His revelation to clear Saidatuna Aisyahرضي الله عنه.'s good name. spreading slander against Saidatuna Aisyahرضي الله عنه.. These slanders became the subject of discussion and the topic of conversation in every gathering in the city of Madinah.

Although the majority of sincere Muslims believe in Saidatuna Aisyahرضي الله عنه. innocent, but they kept quiet and waited for certainty from Rasulullah.

Among them is Mistah bin Usasah رضي الله عنه . cousin of Sayidina Abu Bakar رضي الله عنه. He was a poor man, who was always helped by Sayidina Abu Bakar رضي الله عنه.

Because Mistah bin Usasah رضي الله عنه had a good reputation and was among those involved in the Badr war, many Muslims began to believe him. So, at that moment, Allah sent down His revelation to clear Saidatuna Aisyahرضي الله عنه.'s good name.

After learning the truth, Sayidina Abu Bakar رضي الله عنه was very angry with Mistah for spreading slander on Saidatuna Aisyahرضي الله عنه.Sayidina Abu Bakar رضي الله عنه continued to swear that he would never help Mistah again.

Many Muslims support Sayidina Abu Bakar رضي الله عنه's actions because before, Mistah was completely dependent on Abu Bakar's help but was still involved in spreading slander against Saidatuna Aisyahرضي الله عنه..

Then Allah revealed His revelation as a warning to both of them. Mistah was reprimanded with 80 lashes for her involvement in the slander of Saidatuna Aisyahرضي الله عنه. (al-Isabah Fi Ma'rifat al-Sahabah), while Sayidina Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه was reprimanded with the revelation of this verse:

"And let not those who have wealth and a comfortable life among you (like Abu Bakr), swear that they no longer want to give help to their relatives and the poor and those who migrated in the way of God (like Mistah bin Uthatha); and (on the contrary) let them forgive and forget the faults of those people; do you not like that God forgives your sins? And (remember) God is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."
(QS 24:22).

After this verse was revealed, Sayidina Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه immediately forgave and forgot Mistah's mistake with his words:

"By Allah! I really want Allah to forgive my sins" (Sahih al-Bukhari).

This is the mercy and forgiveness taught by Allah However, what would we do if we were in the same situation? Conflicts and misunderstandings will always arise between us and our friends and family all the time. Will we forgive them (no matter who is wrong) like Sayidina Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه forgave Mistah?

Do you want to obtain forgiveness from Allah?
