Abdullah Dzul Bijadain's رضي الله عنه

Illustration Only.

Abdullah Dzul Bijadain's رضي الله عنه real name is Abdul Uzza Al-Mazani. He was an orphan from a poor family, a tribe of Mazaniah located between Makkah and Madinah. Then his name changed to Abdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله عنه which means "who has two pieces of cloth", a name given by Rasulullah.

Abdul Uzza had been abandoned by his parents since he was a child, that's why he lived with his uncle. The uncle was a very rich man. He had spent a lot of wealth to finance Abdul Uzza. He lived so rich that he only wanted to wear the best clothes. He also has 2 horses which he always uses interchangeably. But sadly, he and his people still worship idols.

One time, when Abdullah Dzul Bijadain's رضي الله عنه  was traveling, he met the Muhajirin. Abdullah Dzul Bijadain's رضي الله عنه  also had a conversation with them and after that conversation, he was finally moved and decided to embrace Islam. Abdullah Dzul Bijadain's رضي الله عنه  situation changed every time he saw a friend who emigrated from Makkah to Madinah, he ran and followed him saying, "Wait for me until I hear from you the Koran. I want to memorize a new verse from you." Abdullah Dzul Bijadain's رضي الله عنه  had a strong determination to study religion more deeply when the companions felt their souls were threatened and they were afraid of the spies of the Quraysh. In Abdullah Dzul Bijadain's رضي الله عنه 's mind at that time, he just wanted to get closer to Allah.

Finally, there was a friend who said, "Why are you waiting in your country (Makkah) to migrate to Madia?". He also replied that he would not migrate unless he took his uncle's hand to invite guidance. Abdullah Dzul Bijadain's رضي الله عنه stayed in his tribe for 3 years. Abdullah Dzul Bijadain's رضي الله عنه still adheres firmly to the religion of Islam even though the rest of his people are far from obedience and worshiping idols. For 3 years Abdullah Dzul Bijadain's رضي الله عنه forced himself to remain steadfast. If he wants to worship Allah, then he will go outside of his people to the middle of the desert. All this time he hid his Islam from people.

Every day, Abdullah Dzul Bijadain's رضي الله عنه went to see his uncle saying, "O my uncle, I heard that there is a man named Muhammad who said this and that". Then he recited the verses of the Quran in front of his uncle while saying, "O my uncle, I heard that there is a man named Muhammad who said this and that". Then he recited the verses of the Quran in front of his uncle. But his uncle scolded him all the way. During those 3 years, Abdullah Dzul Bijadain's رضي الله عنه had a hard time. Finally, his patience reached its peak. Abdullah Dzul Bijadain's رضي الله عنه met his uncle and said, "O uncle, I prefer the Rasulullah over you." I could not part with him. I tell you that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger. I migrated to him. If you want to go with me, I will be the happiest person". His uncle replied, "If you ignore everything other than Islam, then I will ban everything that belongs to you". He replied, "O uncle, do as you like because I prefer Allah and Rasulullah".

His uncle also did something unbelievable, "If you keep insisting, then I will ban you down to the clothes that stick to your body". His uncle stood up and cut his shirt. Rasulullah is almost like a naked person. Abdullah Dzul Bijadain's رضي الله عنه still came out in such a condition. When he went out he found a piece of woolen cloth and divided it into 2 parts, then wore it like an ihram cloth. Then Abdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله عنه migrated and met Rasulullah for the first time.

It is truly unimaginable how great his privilege is to Rasulullahﷺ even though he has never met him.

Rasulullah asked, "Who are you?"

Abdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله عنه  replied "I am Abdul Uzza".

Rasulullah asked again, "Why are you dressed like this?"

Abdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله عنه replied again, "My uncle did this to me. I have chosen you, O Messenger of Allah, and have been patient for 3 years until I can come to you in a state of istiqomah (remaining) obedient to Allah".

Rasulullah  asked again "Did you really do that?"

Abdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله عنه  replied again, "True, O Rasulullah."

Then Rasulullah said, "From today you are not Abdul Uzza, you are Abdullah Dzul Bijadain. Allah has replaced those 2 cloths with a place to live and a cloth in heaven, which you can wear whenever you like and you can use whenever you like."

Abdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله عنه  lived his new life full of happiness, he spent his days worshiping AllahAbdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله عنه  always accompanied Rasulullah like a pair of eyes that are always with the face, in order to gain guidance and knowledge and imitate the morals of the most perfect person. His love for Rasulullah cannot be engraved with beautiful words and writings, only Allah knows its extent..

Together with several other friends, he became ahlus suffah. Lives in the Prophet's Mosque because he doesn't have a house. With that, Abdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله عنه was very close to Rasulullah and had more opportunities to learn from him about the religion of Islam.

Loving Islam is a totality for him. After learning more about Islam with the greatest mentor, Rasulullah, his enthusiasm grew even more. The fire of love in his soul was uncontrollable when it spoke about the religion of Allah.

The friends are famous for not having an excessive ambition to pursue the world, on the contrary, they compete and are very diligent to achieve high degrees in heaven someday. Likewise with. His expectations of martyrdom to taste heaven was so high that he hoped to die on the battlefield. Abdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله also asked Rasulullah  to be prayed for.

But Rasulullah  said to him while holding his shoulder, "O Allah, indeed I forbid (not willing) the disbelievers shed their blood."

This is an expression of Rasulullah 's love for this noble Companion.

Just another version about the best of Companions
Abdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله عنه.

Some of us may not be familiar with the name Abdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله عنه . But after reading his story, what grew was admiration. How the companions of Rasulullah, limitations do not prevent them from doing charity and struggling.

The Companions are the best generation of this Ummah. They are like stars. To whomever we look from among friends, there is a light of glory and example. The fruit of the tarbiyah of Rasulullah, the best role model in the universe.

After the Fajr prayer, Rasulullah used to greet his companions. And that morning, there was a new face at the Rasulullah's Mosque.

"Who are you?" asked Rasulullah to the man who wore rough and very simple clothes. The scabbard and clothes seemed to be made of the same cloth, and the colors were also the same.

The man then recounted his journey.

"My name is Abdul Uzza. I live with my uncle in Muzaniyah. I have kept my Islam a secret for a long time. Until yesterday when my uncle found out, he kicked me out. He asked for all his gifts back, even the clothes I was wearing. I handed over my clothes right then and there. Then I went home to my mother and she cut this rough cloth in half. One for my scabbard, one for the clothes.”

"Then your name is Abdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله عنه, the servant of Allah who wears two rough cloths."

Day after day, time goes by fast until the year changes. Abdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله عنه is always passionate about practicing and fighting for Islam. Limitations did not prevent him from being with Rasulullah.

Along with several other friends, he became ahlus suffah. Living in the Nabawi Mosque because I don't have a home. But precisely in that way, Abdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله عنه was more like Rasulullah and had more opportunities to learn from him about this religion.

Economic limitations also did not diminish Abdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله عنه's spirit of jihad. In every opportunity of jihad, he wants to be martyred for the sake of Allah. Martyrdom in the path of God is his highest ideal. Exactly the slogan of the mujahideen: Asy asyahid fi sabilillah asma amanina. Before the battle of Tabuk in the ninth year of Hijrah, Abdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله عنه asked for the Prophet's prayer. "O Messenger of Allah, pray for me to be killed in this war until I am martyred."

“No. You will not be killed. But if you get sick with a fever and then die, you die as a martyr," answered Rasulullah at that time.

And true. The Tabuk War was won without a fight. Abdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله عنه was not killed. But when he was about to return to Madinah, Abdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله عنه had a fever. Until one night, Abdullah bin Mas'ud رضي الله عنه heard the sound of people digging in the ground. A light was seen in a place quite far from his camp.

Abdullah bin Mas'ud رضي الله عنه then went there to see what was happening. Apparently, Rasulullah along with Saiyidina Abu Bakr As Siddique رضي الله عنه and other companions were digging graves. Then Rasulullah carried the corpse and put it in the grave.

"O Allah, today I am pleased with him, so please him," the special prayer came out of the mouth of Rasulullah when he buried Abdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله عنه.

Abdullah bin Mas'ud رضي الله عنه really wanted that prayer. "If only the corpse was mine," said the companion of Rasulullah, the expert commentator.

The story of Abdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله عنه brings at least three ibrahs for us:

1. Faith is dead

Such is the great challenge faced in The story of Abdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله عنه to become a Muslim. His uncle, who had been with him all this time, became opposed and asked for all the gifts if he converted to Islam. Even the clothes he wore were asked for.

But that did not dampen The story of Abdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله عنه. Faith is a fixed price that cannot be exchanged and hindered by any big world.

Many other friends have had similar obstacles. Saiyidina Mus'ab bin Umair رضي الله عنه when he converted to Islam was boycotted by his mother, all his gifts were embargoed, and he was even held captive. But Saiyidina Mus'ab bin Umair رضي الله عنه won the faith.

Also Saiyidina Saad bin Abi Waqash رضي الله عنه  . When her mother found out she had converted to Islam, she opposed it with a hunger strike. Hoping that Saiyidina Saad bin Abi Waqash رضي الله عنه took pity on him and then returned to worshiping idols. But Saiyidina Saad bin Abi Waqash رضي الله عنه won the faith.

Maybe the test we face is not as heavy as theirs. But whatever the test, faith must not waver. Don't die except in Islamic conditions.

ا ا الَّذِينَ ا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ اتِهِ لَا لَّا لِمُونَ

"O you who believe, fear Allah with true piety and do not die unless you are Muslim." (Surat Ali Imran: 102)

2. Limitations do not hinder the struggle

Abdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله عنه has many limitations. He has no home, even his clothes are only rough cloth cut into sarongs and clothes. But that didn't stop him from struggling. This does not prevent him from doing the best for Islam.

Many other friends also have limitations. Saiyidina Abu Ayyub Al Ansari رضي الله عنه , for example. His legs were deformed, but he had a burning zeal for jihad until he was martyred and his grave was near Istanbul, Turkey (Constantinople).

Limitations do not prevent the friends from struggling. It shouldn't stop us either. Precisely by struggling, by helping Allah's religion, Allah will give His help to us.

ا ا الَّذِينَ ا ا اللَّهَ امَكُمْ

"O you who believe, if you help Allah's religion, Allah will surely help you and strengthen your position."

(Surah Muhammad: 7)

3. Hereafter orientation

The companions made the afterlife the highest orientation. Abdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله عنه goal is the goal of the hereafter. That's what Abdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله عنه has, so he hastened to welcome the call for jihad. That's what made him ask Rasulullah to pray for him to be martyred.

Likewise, Abdullah bin Mas'ud رضي الله عنه was jealous of Abdullah Dzul Bijadain رضي الله عنه because he got the pleasure of Rasulullah and was prayed for to get the pleasure of Allah which he would surely be pleased with. Abdullah bin Mas'ud رضي الله عنه was never envious of worldly matters, but he was envious of the glory of the hereafter like this.
