Dhakwan ibn ‘Abdul Qais al Ansari al Khazraji رضي الله عنه

Illustrations Purposes Only

He is Sayyidina Dhakwan ibn ‘Abdul Qais ibn Khaldah, Dhu al Shimalayn, al Ansari al Zuraqi رضي الله عنه. His agnomen was Abu al Sabu ’رضي الله عنه . He witnessed both meetings of al ‘Aqabah. Abu al Sabu’رضي الله عنه then left Madinah to be with Rasulullah and lived with him in Makkah. Thus Abu al Sabu ’رضي الله عنه was known as the Muhajirin Ansari. Abu al Sabu ’رضي الله عنه participated in Badr and was martyred during the Battle of Uhud. Abu al Hakam ibn al Akhnas ibn Shariq killed him.

Seeing this, Sayyidina ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib رضي الله عنه went in hot pursuit of the villain who was mounted on a horse, and struck his leg with a sword thus severing it with half of his thigh. He then flung him off his horse and finished him off. This occurred in Shawwal, 32 months after hijrah. Dhakwan had no offspring.

Ibn Hisham says, “His name was ‘Umair. He was known as Dhu al Shimalayn (lit. the possessor of two left hands) because he was left-handed.”

One hadith establishes glad tidings of him entering Jannat:

From ‘Asim ibn ‘Umar ibn Jafar al ‘Umari from―Suhayl ibn Abi Salih who narrates:

When Rasulullah left on the Day of Uhud, he called out, “Who will volunteer to close this opening tonight?”―or something to the effect.

A man from the Ansar from the Banu Zurayq stood up who was called Dhakwan ibn ‘Abd Qais aka Abu al Sabu’, and submitted, “I will.”

Rasulullah asked, “Who are you?”

“Ibn ‘Abd Qais,” he replied.

Rasulullah said, “Sit down.”

Rasulullah then made a second proclamation and again Dhakwan stood up. Rasulullah asked, “Who are you?”

“I am Abu al Sabu’,” he replied.

Rasulullahinstructed, “Be at such and such a place.”

Dhakwan رضي الله عنه submitted, “O Messenger of Allah, it was only me.”

We felt unsafe that the mushrikin might have a spy. Rasulullah announced, “Whoever desires to look at a man who will step on the grass of Jannat with his feet tomorrow should look at this man.”

Dhakwan رضي الله عنه walked to his wives to bid them farewell. Dhakwan رضي الله عنه's  wives caught hold of his clothes and cried, “O Abu al Sabu’, are you leaving us and going?”

Dhakwan رضي الله عنه snatched his clothes away from them. After passing them, he faced them and said, “Your rendezvous is the Day of Qiyamah.” Dhakwan رضي الله عنه was subsequently martyred.

(Ibn al Mubarak narrated it in al-Jihad; (3) Abu Nuaim رضي الله عنه reported it from the same chain in Ma’rifat al Sahabah(4), and Hafiz mentioned it in al Isabah(5). This narration is mursal since Suhayl ibn Abi Salih is a Tabi’i. However, Dhakwan’s martyrdom in the Battle of Uhud has been mentioned via a number of mursal isnads. Abu Nuaimرضي الله عنه documents that Ibn Shihab al Zuhri and ‘Urwah listed Dhakwan as one of the martyrs of Uhud.(6) )

Another version of Dhakwan Ibn Abdul Qais رضي الله عنه

Dzakwan bin Abdul Qais bin Khaldah az Zuraqi al Khazraji Al Ansari Al Madani (Arabic: ذكوان بن عبد القيس و ذكوان بن عبد قيس) is one of Rasulullahﷺ 's companions from among the Bani Zuraiq, which is part of the Khazraj tribe or Bani Khazraj. Dhakwan رضي الله عنه is famous for being one of the Ansar people who followed the first pledge of Aqabah or pledge of Aqabah 1 around the year 621 AD. Dzakwan bin Abdul Qais Dhakwan رضي الله عنه is also known for his story on the night before Gazwatul Uhud occurred, namely on March 22, 625 AD. At that time he volunteered to be the guardian of the apostle's camp 3 times (because the apostle gave 3 proposals to 3 people to guard his camp). In the story, on the first occasion, he presented himself in the name of 'Dzakwan'.

Then, on the second occasion, he presented himself as 'Abu Saba' (his chew). And lastly, he volunteered with the name 'Ibnu Abdul Qais' alias the son of Abdul Qais who is his father (which, of these three names is the name of the same person). This could happen because at that time the night was very dark (minimum lighting) and the apostle's war tactic was not to light torches so that the location could not be known by the enemy or so as not to attract the attention of the enemy (not too flashy). Dhakwan رضي الله عنه was one of the martyrs of Uhud along with 69 other companions. Because of his generosity, perseverance, and loyalty, he earned the nickname 'The Keeper of the Messenger's Tent in Uhud' and received direct prayers from Rasulullah or was prayed for by Rasulullah until he received great blessings and mercy.
