Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه

Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه

Usayd ibn Hudayr al-Awsi (Arabic: أسيد بن حضير الأوسي, romanized: Usayd ibn Huḍayr al-Awsī, also Usaid ibn Hudair) was a companion of Rasulullah and a leader of the Banū Aws tribe in the city of Medinah before his conversion to Islam. Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه inherited his leadership position from his father who was a fierce fighter, and one of the senior Arab noblemen in Jahiliyyah.

Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه, son of Simak, son of Atik, son of Umru' al-Qays, son of Zayd, son of Abd al-Ashhal, son of Jashm, son of Harith, son of al-Khazraj, son Amr, son of Malik, son of Aws, son of Haritha, son of Tha'laba, son of Amr, son of Amir, son of Haritha, son of Tha'laba, son of Ghassan, son of al-Azd, son of al-Ghawth, son of Nabt, son of Malik, Son of Zayd, son of Kahlan, son of Saba, son of Yashjab, son of Ya'rob, son of Qahtan, al-Ashhali al-Awsi.

Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه is the son of a leader and leader of the Aus tribe. Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه was among the first Ansars to embrace Islam. After converting to Islam, he attended the Bai'at Aqabah. Which is a faithful promise to protect Rasulullah in the new land, the city of Madinah. Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه is also a person whose recitation of the Qur'an is listened to by angels. How is the story of Islam? And how special is his life journey? Listen to the following story.

His name is Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه bin Abdul Asyhal al-Anshari. It is the knight of the Aus tribe and their leader. His father was also the warlord of a great tribe and one of the noble figures in Arab history during the Jahiliyyah period. As the saying goes: 'The fruit does not fall far from the tree'. Likewise between Usaid and his father Hudhair.

Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه was an educated person. Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه was able to write, even though the Arabs at that time were illiterate people. Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه can also swim and is good at archery. The classical Arabs called those who possessed such abilities al-Kamil (the perfect). Among the Ansar, Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه was among the first to embrace Islam. Even before Saad bin Muadz accepted Islam. Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه accepted the preaching of Mus'ab bin Umair رضي الله عنه who was sent by Rasulullah to preach to the people of Yathrib. After that, Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه joined the people who offered Rasulullah the land of hijrah. Because Makkah is already very insecure. Even Madinah is guaranteed to be ready to receive Sayyidul Anam. And the Muhajirin of Makkah.

When the Ansar returned from their first pledge of allegiance to Rasulullah, he included Mus'ab bin Umair رضي الله عنه with them. A preacher who is in charge of reciting the Qur'an to the people of Yathsrib. Teach them, Islam. And give an understanding of religion.

According to Tabari, Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه was known from his pre-Islamic life as a noble who excels at swimming and archery, while he is also known as al-Kamil (The perfect one)

Conversion to Islam

Rasulullah had sent Mus'ab ibn Umayrرضي الله عنه to Madinah to teach and educate Muslims of the Ansar (those Madinah residents who supported Rasulullah) and to invite others to the religion of Allah. Sa'd ibn Mu'adh who was a friend of Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه learned of this plan and wanted to incite him against Mus'ab. Sa'd asked Usayd ibn Hudayr to go to Mus'ab ibn Umayrرضي الله عنه and drive him away. Usayd ibn Hudayr went to Mus'ab ibn Umayrرضي الله عنه, who was hosted by As'ad ibn Zurarah رضي الله عنه, of the city leaders predating the calling of Islam. At As'ad's place, Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه ran into a crowd of people listening with attention to Mus'ab ibn Umayrرضي الله عنه 's call to Islam. Mus'ab ibn Umayrرضي الله عنه invited Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه to sit and listen before acting, then Mus'ab ibn Umayrرضي الله عنه recited to Quran. Usayd was moved by what he heard and inquired how to join the new religion, he followed Mus'ab's instructions and declared his Islam.

In Madinah, Mus'ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه is called muqri. He lived in the house of As'ad bin Zurarah رضي الله عنه. Then As'ad invited him to the garden belonging to Bani Zhafar. Both sat in it with people who had embraced Islam. Seeing the intensity of Mus'ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه's preaching and the acceptance of the people of Madinah, their leader, Saad bin Muadz, did not remain silent. He sent Usaid bin Hudhair to meet Mus'ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه and As'ad bin Zurarah رضي الله عنه. “Go away! Meet the two. Both come to deceive the weak among us. Stop them! As'ad bin Zurarah رضي الله عنه is my aunt's son, if it wasn't for that, I would have taken care of him myself.", said Saad to Usaid. Saad bin Muadz رضي الله عنه and Usaid bin Hudhair رضي الله عنه are two tribal leaders of Bani Asyhal. Both have closeness.

Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه immediately took his spear. Then went to see Mus'ab and As'ad رضي الله عنه. When As'ad saw the arrival of Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه, he said to Mus'ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه, "This is the leader of his people. Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه has come to see you. Be sincere to God in facing it." As'ad hopes that this leader of the Bani Abdul Asyhal will accept Mus'ab's preaching. "If he wants to sit, I will talk to him", said Mus'ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه.

Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه arrived in front of the two. He started cursing them both. Then said, "What do you two teach! You want to fool the weak among us?! Go! Leave us if you still want to live!

Mus'ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه said to Usaid, "How about you sit down first and listen? If what you hear pleases you, accept it. But if what you hear is something you hate, I won't continue what you don't like."

Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه (before Convertingstuck his spear and sat with the two. Mus'ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه began to talk to him about Islam and read him the Qur'an. After that, Mus'ab ibn Umayr رضي الله عنه and As'ad رضي الله عنه  said, "By Allah, before talking to him (further) we knew from his radiant and shady face that he had accepted Islam." Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه said, "How good and beautiful that speech (the Qur'an) is. What do you do if you want to embrace this religion?" Both answered, "Take a bath and purify yourself. Clean your clothes. Then confess and pray." Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه also stood up. Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه bathed and purified himself. Then clean his clothes. After that, Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه confessed with a sincere confession. Then pray two rak'ahs.

Historians differ on whether he participated in the Battle of Badr or not. For sure, he participated in the Uhud War.

After converting to Islam, Rasulullah befriended Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله to Zaid bin Haritsahرضي الله عنه.

Beautiful Quran reading

From Abu Said al-Khudri, from Muhammad bin Ibrahim, from Usaid bin Hudhairرضي الله عنه , the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said,

اقْرَأْ يَا أُسَيْدُ فَقَدْ أُوتِيتَ مِزْمَارًا مِنْ مَزَامِيرِ آلِ دَاوُدَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ

"Read it, Usaid. Truly you are blessed with (the beauty of a voice like) a flute from the flutes of the family of David 'alaihissalam.'

[al-Ahad wa al-Matsani li Ibnu Abi Ashim, No: 1707].

Late one night, Usaid bin Hudhairرضي الله sat on the back porch of his house. His son, Yahya, slept beside him. A horse that is always ready to fight fi sabilillah, is tethered not far from where it sits. The atmosphere of the night is calm, soft, and silent. The surface of the sky is clear and clean. The stars looked down upon the sleeping earth with pity and sympathy. Influenced by the atmosphere of the silent and holy night, Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله 's heart was moved to spread the fragrance into the moist and clean air in the form of the fragrance of the holy Qur'an.

Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله  read the Qur'an with his soft and melodious voice:

"Alif, Lam, Mim, This is the book (the Qur'an) in which there is no doubt: it is a guide for those who believe in the unseen, who establish prayer, and spend part of the sustenance that we have bestowed to them. And those who believe in the Book (the Qur'an) that was revealed to you and the Books that were revealed before you, as well as those who believe in the existence of the Hereafter."

(Al-Baqarah: 1-4)

Hearing the reading, his horse ran around almost breaking his tie. When Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله was silent, the horse was silent and calm. Usaid continued to read: "They are the ones who get guidance from their Lord, and they are the ones who win."

 (Al Baqarah: 5).

The horse runs and spins even more powerfully than before. Usaid was silent, and so was the horse. Things like that happen over and over again. When he read, his horse ran and rebelled. When he is silent, then the horse is calm again Usaid was worried that his son would be trampled by a horse, so he woke him up. When he looked up at the sky, he saw a magnificent umbrella-like cloud. He had never seen it before. The umbrella was very beautiful and shiny, hanging like lamps and filling the horizon with its bright rays. The cloud moved up until it disappeared from view. On the next morning, Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله went to see RasulullahUsayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله told him about the events he experienced and saw yesterday.

Rasulullahﷺ said, "That's an angel who wants to listen to you read the Qur'an, O Usaid. If you continue your reading, surely many people will see it too. The view will not be closed from them.”

Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله during the time Rasulullah

Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله  is not ahlul badr. Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله did not participate in the first war between the Muslims and the polytheists of Makkah. He said; "O Messenger of Allah, all praise be to Allah who has given you victory and made you happy. By God, O Messenger, I did not participate in Badr because I did not expect you to meet the enemy. I thought you were just intercepting the Quraysh caravan. If I knew you were going to war, I would definitely not miss it.” Rasulullah said, "Yes, you are telling the truth."

We know that Rasulullah's departure to Badr was not to fight. But intercepting the trade caravan. Rasulullah also did not oblige all companions to participate. In fact, he only invites those who are really ready. No need for long preparations. Because intercepting the caravan must be done immediately, there is no need for many people, and there is no need for complete preparation.

Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله was one of the companions who once mocked Rasulullahﷺ by demanding "qisas" from him. Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله said, "While he was joking and making people laugh, Rasulullahﷺ poked his waist with a stick. Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله said, 'I ask for revenge for what you did'. Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله said, 'Reply'. Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله said again, 'You are wearing clothes, while I was not'. Then Rasulullahﷺ took off his shirt. Immediately Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله hugged him and kissed his body, between the waist and ribs. All I want is this, O Messenger of Allah (not to reply)."

Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله during the time with other Companions.

From Abdullah bin Hubairah, he said thatUsayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه was an imam in the village of Bani Abdul Asyhal. One day he got sick. When Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه recovered from his illness, he went to the mosque. The people said, "Go ahead (become an Imam)." Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه  said, “No. I am not able to pray (perfectly).” His people said again, "No one will become an imam as long as you are among us." Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه  said, "Sit down." They also pray while sitting.

This is Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه 's position among his people. And when the imam sits because of illness, the makmum also sits even if they are able to stand.

Usayd ibn Hudayrرضي الله عنه during the time  of Caliph Saiyidina Abu Bakar As Siddique رضي الله عنه.

From Umm Mukminin Aishah رضي الله عنه , the wife of Rasulullah, , she said, "One day my necklace fell in the Baida area. At that time we almost reached Madinah. Rasulullah ordered to put down the riding animals and spend the night in the area. When Rasulullah was sleeping on my lap, my father stabbed my waist. Saiyidina Abu Bakar As Siddique رضي الله عنه was angry because of my carelessness and wasted the group's time. Saiyidina Abu Bakar As Siddique رضي الله عنه  said, 'You are holding people back'. Then Rasulullah  woke up and dawn arrived. Rasulullah  searched for water (for ablution) but did not find it. The word of  Allah came down,

"O you who believe, when you want to pray, then wash your face and your hands up to the elbows, and wipe your head and (wash) your feet up to the ankles, and if you are a virgin then take a bath, and if you are sick or in traveling or returning from a toilet or touching a woman, and you do not get water, then do tayammum with good (clean) soil; wipe your face and hands with the soil. God does not want to make it difficult for you, but He wants to cleanse you and perfect His favors for you so that you will be grateful."

[Quran An-Nisa: 6]

Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه said, "Allah blesses you for the people, O family of Abu Bakr. You guys are a blessing.”

Usayd ibn Hudayrرضي الله عنه during the time  of Caliph Saiyidina Umar ibn Al Khattab رضي الله عنه

Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه said, "I heard Rasulullah say,

I will see you later

"It's true that after I leave, you will see egoism (self-centeredness)."

During the reign of Caliph Saiyidina Umar ibn Al Khattab رضي الله عنه, clothes were distributed. I am one of those who get a share. I saw the clothes, then I gave them to my son (because he was small). When I was praying, someone passed me. A Quraish youth. He also wore distributed clothes. But his clothes are long. I immediately remembered the words of Rasulullah, :

"Surely after my death, you will see egoism (self-centeredness)." I commented, 'What he said is true'.

Then someone went to Caliph Saiyidina Umar ibn Al Khattab رضي الله عنه to tell him about it. Saiyidina Umar ibn Al Khattab رضي الله عنه came to see me when I was about to pray. Saiyidina Umar ibn Al Khattab رضي الله عنه said, 'Pray, Usaid'. After the prayer, he said, 'What did you say'? I will tell him. He said, 'That is the clothes that were sent to So-and-so. A person who participated in the Battle of Badr, Uhud, and the Pledge of Allegiance of Aqabah. Then this young man came and bought it from him. He also wears it. I know what he said happened in my time. I said, 'By God, Commander of the Faithful, I did not expect that to happen in your time'."

Usayd ibn Hudayrرضي الله عنه - Be a Way of Goodness for Others

After embracing Islam, Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه said to Mus'ab ibn Umair رضي الله عنه, "Indeed there is someone behind me (namely Saad bin Muadz), if he follows you two, surely no one from his people will be left behind to follow him. I will bring him to you two now.” Then he asked Saad bin Muadz to meet Mus'ab Ibn Umair رضي الله عنه. Saad bin Muadz also embraced Islam. Then followed by other people of the Aus tribe.

The position of Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه

In Sunan at-Termidzi there is a narration from Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه that Rasulullahﷺ said;

"The best man is Abu Bakr. The best man is Umar. The best man is Abu Ubaidah bin al-Jarrah. The best man is Usaid bin Hudhair. The best man is Tsabit bin Qais bin Syammas. The best man is Muadz bin Jabal. The best man is Muadz bin Amr bin al-Jamuh.”

Among the companions who narrated the hadith of Rasulullahﷺ from Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه were Ummul Mu'minin Aisyahرضي الله عنه, Anas bin Malikرضي الله عنه , Abdurrahman bin Abi Lailaرضي الله عنه, Ikrimah bin Khalid bin al-Ash رضي الله عنه.

Umm Mukminin Aishah رضي الله عنه said, "There are three people from the Ansar whose virtues are unmatched by other Ansar people. They are all from Bani Abdul Asyhal: Saad bin Muadz, Usaid bin Hudhair, Ibbad bin Bisyr.”

Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه bore a strong, bright belief in his heart and mind, and his belief made him full of patience discernment, and a sound appraisal made him a trustworthy man.

During the expedition against Bani Al-Mustaliq, Abd Allah Ibn Ubaiy was so furious that he said to the people of Al-Madiinah around him, "You've let them enter your town and share your money. By Allah, if you cease giving them what you have, they'll turn to another place. By Allah, if we return to Al- Madinah, indeed the more honorable will expel the meaner from there."

The venerable Companion, Zaid Ibn Arqam رضي الله عنه heard these poisoned hypocritical words, so he had to inform RasulullahRasulullah was much hurt. When he met Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه  he said;

"Don't you know what your friend has said?"

 Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه  asked;

"Which friend, O Messenger of Allah?"

Rasulullah answered;, "`Abd Allah Ibn Ubaiy."

Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه  said; "What did he say?"

Rasulullah said;

"He claimed that if he returned to Al-Madiinah, the more honorable will expel the meaner from there."

Then Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه said;

"By Allah, you, O Messenger of Allah, will expel him from there, by Allah's permission. By Allah, he is the meaner and you are the more honorable."

Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه added, "O Messenger of Allah, treat him gently. By Allah, Allah brought you to us while the people of Abd Allah were preparing to crown him king of Al-Madiinah. He sees that Islam has deprived him of kingship."

With this calm, profound thinking, Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه solved problems using his presence of mind.

On the Day of As-Saqiifah, just after the demised of Rasulullah, a group of the Ansaar headed by Sa'd Ibn `Ubaadah رضي الله عنه announced their right to succession and debated furiously.  Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه, who was a prominent Ansaar, as we know, took a positive attitude in settling the matter and his words were like the dispelling of shadows in the course of events.  Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه  stood to address the group of Ansaar:

"You know that Rasulullah was one of the Muhaajiruun. His successor, then, should be one of the Muhaajiruun. We used to be the Ansar of the Messenger of Allah. Today we have to be the Ansaar of his successor."

And his words brought peace and safety.

Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه  (May Allah be pleased with him) spent his life as a humble worshipper, sacrificing his energy and money in the cause of goodness, and putting the advice of Rasulullahﷺ to the Ansaars in his mind: "!Be patient until you meet me in the realm of Paradise.!"

Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه was the object of honor and love by As-Siddiiq because of his religiosity and noble manners. Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه also had the same status in the heart of the Commander of the Faithful `Umar and in the hearts of all the Companions.

Listening to his voice while reciting Qur'an was one of the greatest honors that the Companions aspired to. His voice was so humble and resonant that Rasulullahﷺ said about it that the angels came near its possessor one night to hear it.

Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه - Demised

Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه died in the year 20 H. Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه  died in the month of Sha'ban in the 20th year of the Hijra. Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه was buried in Baqi'. . His bier was carried by Caliph Saiyidina Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه and he was buried in Al-Baqi Cemetery.

When Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه died he left a debt of 4000 Dirhams. Then the land was sold. Caliph Saiyidina Umar ibn al-Khattab رضي الله عنه said, "I will not leave my brothers and sisters in poverty. The land was returned and the debt was paid from the investment of the land. Every year paid 1000 Dirhams.

About the pious  Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه – Even the angel descent to listen to his Quran recitation.

Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه narrated: That while Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه was reciting Surat Al-Baqarah (The Cow) at night, and his horse was tied beside him, the horse was suddenly startled and troubled. When Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه stopped reciting, the horse became quiet, and when he started again, the horse was startled again. Then Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه stopped reciting and the horse became quiet too. Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه started reciting again and the horse was startled and troubled once again.

Then Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه stopped reciting and his son, Yahya was beside the horse. Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه was afraid that the horse might trample on him. When Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه took the boy away and looked towards the sky, Usayd ibn Hudayr رضي الله عنه could not see it. The next morning he informed Rasulullah who said, "Recite, O Ibn Hudair! Recite, O Ibn Hudair!" Ibn Hudair replied, "O Allah's Apostle! My son, Yahya was near the horse and I was afraid that it might trample on him, so I looked towards the sky, and went to him.

Then I looked at the sky, and I saw something like a cloud containing what looked like lamps, so I went out in order not to see it." Rasulullah said, "Do you know what that was?" Ibn Hudair replied, "No." Rasulullah said, "Those were Angels who came near to you for your voice and if you had kept on reciting till dawn, it would have remained there till morning when people would have seen it as it would not have disappeared."

Aisha said, "I borrowed a necklace from Asma' and it was lost. So Allah's Apostle sent a man to search for it and he found it. Then the time of the prayer became due and there was no water. They prayed (without ablution) and informed Allah's Apostle about it, so the verse of Tayammum was revealed." Usaid bin Hudair said to 'Aisha, "May Allah reward you. By Allah, whenever anything happened which you did not like, Allah brought good for you and for the Muslims in that." Al-Jurf and the time for the 'Asr prayer became due while he was at Marbad-AnNa'am (sheep-fold), so he (performed Tayammum) and prayed there and then entered Medina when the sun was still high but he did not repeat that prayer.

“When one of their womenfolk menstruated, the Jews would not eat or drink with them, nor mix with them in their houses. They asked the Prophet of Allah (saw) about that, and Allah the Mighty and Sublime revealed: They ask you concerning menstruation. Say: ‘That is an Adha (a harmful thing).’ [2:222] So the Messenger of Allah (saw) commanded them to eat and drink with them (menstruating women) and to mix with them in their houses, and to do everything with them except intercourse.

The Jews said: ‘The Messenger of Allah (saw) does not leave anything of our affairs except he goes against it.’ Usaid bin Hudair and ‘Abbad bin Bishr went and told the Messenger of Allah (saw) and they said: ‘Should we have intercourse with them when they are menstruating?’ The expression of the Messenger of Allah (saw) changed greatly until we thought that he was angry with them, and they left. Then the Messenger of Allah (saw) received a gift of milk, so he sent someone to bring them back and he gave them some to drink, so they knew that he was not angry with them.” (Sahih)

Among the Jews, when a woman menstruated, they did not dine with her, nor did they live with them in their houses; so the Companions of the Apostle (may peace be upon him) asked The Apostle (may peace be upon him), and Allah, the Exalted revealed:" And they ask you about menstruation; say it is a pollution, so keep away from woman during menstruation" to the end (Qur'an, ii. 222). The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: Do everything except intercourse. The Jews heard of that and said: This man does not want to leave anything we do without opposing us in it. Usaid b. Hudair and Abbad b. Bishr came and said: Messenger of Allah, the Jews say such and such thing. We should not have, therefore, any contactwith them (as the Jews do). The face of the Messenger of Allah (way peace be upon him) underwent such a change that we thought he was angry with them, but when they went out, they happened to receive a gift of milk which was sent to the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him). He (the Holy Prophet) called for them and gave them drink, whereby they knew that he was not angry with them.

Hadith no: 330
Narrated: Aisha
(the wife of the Prophet) We set out with Allah’s Apostle on one of his journeys till we reached Al-Baida' or Dhatul-Jaish, a necklace of mine was broken (and lost). Allah's Apostle stayed there to search for it, and so did the people along with him. There was no water at that place, so the people went to Abu- Bakr As-Siddiq and said, "Don't you see what 'Aisha has done? She has made Allah's Apostle and the people stay where there is no water and they have no water with them." Abu Bakr came while Allah's Apostle was sleeping with his head on my thigh, He said, to me: "You have detained Allah's Apostle and the people where there is no water and they have no water with them.
So he admonished me and said what Allah wished him to say and hit me on my flank with his hand. Nothing prevented me from moving (because of pain) but the position of Allah's Apostle on my thigh. Allah's Apostle got up when dawn broke and there was no water. So Allah revealed the Divine Verses of Tayammum. So they all performed Tayammum. Usaid bin Hudair said, "O the family of Abu Bakr! This is not the first blessing of yours." Then the camel on which I was riding was caused to move from its place and the necklace was found beneath it.

We went with the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) on one of his journeys and when we reached the place Baida or Dhat al-jaish, my necklace was broken (and fell somewhere). The Messenger of Allah (way peace be upon him) along with other people stayed there for searching it. There was neither any water at that place nor was there any water with them (the Companions of the Holy Prophet). Some persons came to my father Abu Bakr and said: Do you see what Aisha has done? She has detained the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) and persons accompanying him, and there is neither any water here or with them. So Abu Bakr came there and the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) was sleeping with his head on my thigh.
He (Abu Bakr) said: You have detained the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) and other persons and there is neither water here nor with them. She (Aisha) said: Abu Bakr scolded me and uttered what Allah wanted him to utter and nudged my hips with his hand. And there was nothing to prevent me from stirring but for the fact that the messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) was lying upon my thigh. The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) slept till it was dawn at a waterless place. So Allah revealed the verses pertaining to tayammum and they (the Holy Prophet and his Companions) performed tayammum. Usaid bin al-Hudair who was one of the leaders said: This is not the first of your blessings, 0 Family to Abu Bakr. Aisha said: We made the camel stand which was my mount and found the necklace under it.

(the wife of the Prophet (SAW)) "Whenever Allah's Apostle (SAW) intended to go on a journey, he would draw lots amongst his wives and would take with him the one upon whom the lot fell. During a Ghazwa of his, he drew lots amongst us and the lot fell upon me, and I proceeded with him after Allah had decreed the use of the veil by women. I was carried in a Howdaj (on the camel) and dismounted while still in it. When Allah's Apostle (SAW) was through with his Ghazwa and returned home, and we approached the city of Medina, Allah's Apostle (SAW) ordered us to proceed at night. When the order of setting off was given, I walked till I was past the army to answer the call of nature.
After finishing I returned (to the camp) to depart (with the others) and suddenly realized that my necklace over my chest was missing. So, I returned to look for it and was delayed because of that. The people who used to carry me on the camel, came to my Howdaj and put it on the back of the camel, thinking that I was in it, as, at that time, women were light in weight, and thin and lean, and did not use to eat much. So, those people did not feel the difference in the heaviness of the Howdaj while lifting it, and they put it over the camel. At that time I was a young lady. They set the camel moving and proceeded on.
I found my necklace after the army had gone, and came to their camp to find nobody. So, I went to the place where I used to stay, thinking that they would discover my absence and come back in my search. While in that state, I felt sleepy and slept. Safwan bin Muattal As-Sulami Adh-Dhakwani was behind the army and reached my abode in the morning. When he saw a sleeping person, he came to me, and he used to see me before veiling. So, I got up when I heard him saying, "Inna lil-lah-wa inn a ilaihi rajiun (We are for Allah, and we will return to Him)." He made his camel knell down. He got down from his camel, and put his leg on the front legs of the camel and then I rode and sat over it.
Safwan set out walking, leading the camel by the rope till we reached the army who had halted to take rest at midday. Then whoever was meant for destruction, fell into destruction, (some people accused me falsely) and the leader of the false accusers was Abdullah bin Ubai bin Salul. After that we returned to Medina, and I became ill for one month while the people were spreading the forged statements of the false accusers. I was feeling during my ailment as if I were not receiving the usual kindness from the Prophet (SAW) which I used to receive from him when I got sick. But he would come, greet and say, 'How is that (girl)?' I did not know anything of what was going on till I recovered from my ailment and went out with Um Mistah to the Manasi where we used to answer the call of nature, and we used not to go to answer the call of nature except from night to night and that was before we had lavatories near to our houses.
And this habit of ours was similar to the habit of the old Arabs in the open country (or away from houses). So, I and Um Mistah bint Ruhm went out walking. Um Mistah stumbled because of her long dress and on that she said, 'Let Mistah be ruined.' I said, 'You are saying a bad word. Why are you abusing a man who took part in (the battle of) Badr?' She said, 'O Hanata (you there) didn't you hear what they said?' Then she told me the rumors of the false accusers.
My sickness was aggravated, and when I returned home, Allah's Apostle (SAW) came to me, and after greeting he said, 'How is that (girl)?' I requested him to allow me to go to my parents. I wanted then to be sure of the news through them I Allah's Apostle (SAW) allowed me, and I went to my parents and asked my mother, 'What are the people talking about?' She said, 'O my daughter! Don't worry much about this matter. By Allah, never is there a charming woman loved by her husband who has other wives, but the women would forge false news about her.' I said, 'Glorified be Allah! Are the people really taking of this matter?'
That night I kept on weeping and could not sleep till morning. In the morning Rasulullah SAW called Ali bin Abu Talib RA and Usamah bin Zaid RA when he saw the Divine Inspiration delayed, to consul them about divorcing his wife (i.e. 'Aisha). Usamah bin Zaid RA said what he knew of the good reputation of his wives and added, 'O Rasulullah! Keep you wife, for, by Allah, we know nothing about her but good.' 'Ali bin Abu Talib RA said, 'O Rasulullah! Allah has no imposed restrictions on you, and there are many women other than her, yet you may ask the woman-servant who will tell you the truth.' On that Rasulullah SAW called Barirah and said, 'O Barirah. Did you ever see anything which roused your suspicions about her?' Barirah said, 'No, by Allah

Who has sent you with the Truth, I have never seen in her anything faulty except that she is a girl of immature age, who sometimes sleeps and leaves the dough for the goats to eat.' On that day Rasulullah SAW ascended the pulpit and requested that somebody support him in punishing 'Abdullah bin Ubay bin Salul. Rasulullah SAW said, 'Who will support me to punish that person (Abdullah bin Ubay bin Salul) who has hurt me by slandering the reputation of my family?

By Allah, I know nothing about my family but good, and they have accused a person about whom I know nothing except good, and he never entered my house except in my company.' Sad bin Muadh RA got up and said, 'O Rasulullah!! by Allah, I will relieve you from him. If that man is from the tribe of the Aws, then we will chop his head off, and if he is from our brothers, the Khazraj, then order us, and we will fulfill your order.'

On that Sad bin Ubadah, the chief of the Khazraj and before this incident, he had been a pious man, got up, motivated by his zeal for his tribe and said, 'By Allah, you have told a lie; you cannot kill him, and you will never be able to kill him.' On that Usaid bin Hudair RA got up and said (to Sad bin Ubadah), 'By Allah! You are a liar. By Allah, we will kill him; and you are a hypocrite, defending the hypocrites.' On this the two tribes of Aws and Khazraj got excited and were about to fight each other, while Rasulullah SAW was standing on the pulpit. He got down and quietened them till they became silent and he kept quiet.

On that day I kept on weeping so much so that neither did my tears stop, nor could I sleep. In the morning my parents were with me and I had wept for two nights and a day, till I thought my liver would burst from weeping. While they were sitting with me and I was weeping, an Ansari woman asked my permission to enter, and I allowed her to come in. She sat down and started weeping with me. While we were in this state, Rasulullah SAW came and sat down and he had never sat with me since the day they forged the accusation.

No revelation regarding my case came to him for a month. He recited Tashahhud (i.e. none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is His Rasul and then said, 'O Aisha! I have been informed such-and-such about you; if you are innocent, then Allah will soon reveal your innocence, and if you have committed a sin, then repent to Allah and ask Him to forgive you, for when a person confesses his sin and asks Allah for forgiveness, Allah accepts his repentance.' When Rasulullah SAW finished his speech my tears ceased completely and there remained not even a single drop of it.

I requested my father to reply to Rasulullah SAW on my behalf. My father said, By Allah, I do not know what to say to Rasulullah SAW.' I said to my mother, 'Talk to Rasulullah on my behalf.' She said, 'By Allah, I do not know what to say to Rasulullah SAW I was a young girl and did not have much knowledge of the Quran. I said. 'I know, by Allah, that you have listened to what people are saying and that has been planted in your minds and you have taken it as a truth.

Now, if I told you that I am innocent and Allah knows that I am innocent, you would not believe me and if I confessed to you falsely that I am guilty, and Allah knows that I am innocent you would believe me. By Allah, I don't compare my situation with you except to the situation of Yusuf's (Joseph's) father (i.e. Jacob) who said, 'So (for me) patience is most fitting against that which you assert and it is Allah (Alone) whose help can be sought.' Then I turned to the other side of my bed hoping that Allah would prove my innocence. By Allah I never thought that Allah would reveal Divine Inspiration in my case, as I considered myself too inferior to be talked of in the Holy Quran.

I had hoped that Rasulullah SAW might have a dream in which Allah would prove my innocence. By Allah, Rasulullah SAW had not got up and nobody had left the house before the Divine Inspiration came to Rasulullah SAW So, there overtook him the same state which used to overtake him, (when he used to have, on being inspired divinely). Rasulullah SAW was sweating so much so that the drops of the sweat were dropping like pearls though it was a (cold) wintry day.

When that state of Rasulullah SAW was over, he was smiling and the first word he said, Aisha! Thank Allah, for Allah has declared your innocence.' My mother told me to go to Rasulullah SAW I replied, 'By Allah I will not go to him and will not thank but Allah.' So Allah revealed: "Verily! They who spread the slander are a gang among you . . ." (24.11) When Allah gave the declaration of my Innocence, Abu Bakr RA, who used to provide for Mistah bin Athatha for he was his relative, said, 'By Allah, I will never provide Mistah with anything because of what he said about Aisha.' But Allah later revealed:

"And let not those who are good and wealthy among you swear not to help their kinsmen, those in need and those who left their homes in Allah's Cause. Let them forgive and overlook. Do you not wish that Allah should forgive you? Verily! Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful." (24.22) After that Abu Bakr RA said, 'Yes ! By Allah! I like that Allah should forgive me,' and resumed helping Mistah whom he used to help before. Rasulullah SAW also asked Zainab bint Jahsh RA (i.e. Rasulullah’s wife about me saying, 'What do you know and what did you see?' She replied, 'O Rasulullah! I refrain to claim hearing or seeing what I have not heard or seen. By Allah, I know nothing except goodness about Aisha." Aisha further added "Zainab was competing with me (in her beauty and Rasulullah's love), yet Allah protected her (from being malicious), for she had piety."
