Huzaifah RA - Keeper of Secrets |
Huzaifa RA his one of the well-known Sahabah. He is known as the 'Keeper of Secrets’. Nabi SAW had revealed to him the names of the Munafiqin and had informed him the order of all the evils which the Muslims were to face till the last day. He gave him full details (viz. the name of the mischief maker, his parents' names, his community, etc.) about the incidents that were going to affect three hundred or more people. Hadhrat Huzaifahsays: "Other people used to ask Nabi SAW about good things, while I always asked him about the evil and unpleasant events, so that I might guard against them."
He
then narrated the following conversation with Nabi SAW.Huzaifah
: "O, Nabi of Allah SWT, Shall we slip back to evil, after the
good that you have brought us?"Nabi
SAW: "Yes. The evil is coming."Huzaifah:
"Shall we have good again after that evil?"Nabi
SAW: "Huzaifah! Go and read the Qur’an, ponder on its meaning
and follow its orders." However Huzaifah’s worry grew even
more and he continued his questions about evils that were to afflict
the Muslims.Huzaifah
: “O Nabi of Allah SWT, tell me if good will come after the evil ?”Nabi
SAW: "Yes, good will come again, but the hearts of the people
will not be as clean as before."Huzaifah
: "And will there by any evil coming after this good?"Nabi
SAW: "Yes, There will be such persons who will mislead the
people and take them to Jahannum."Huzaifah:"What
should I do if I witness that time?"Nabi
SAW: "If there is a group of Muslims united under one Amir, then
join them, otherwise separate yourself from all such groups and be
hidden in a corner, or take protection under a tree (i.e., in a
forest) and remain there till you die."
The avid warrior of Islam |
As
Nabi SAW had revealed to him the identities of the Munafiqin of that
time, Sayidina Omar RA ask him: "Is there any Munafiq among my
deputies?" He once replied: "Yes. There is one, but I shall
not reveal his name." Umar RA sent the man home, probably by his
own Judgment. Whenever somebody died, Umar RA would ask if Huzaifah RAv was
participating in the janazah Solah.
If Huzaifah RA was not present, then Sayidina Umar RA would also not attend that funeral. When Huzaifah RA was about to die, he cried in concern and discomfort. People asked him: “Are you weeping over your departure from this world?" He replied: "No, I am not weeping over that. I love to die. I am weeping because I don’t know, at this time of my departure from this world, whether Allah is pleased with me or not." He then made Dua: "O, Allah ! these are the last moments of my life. You know that I have always loved you. Bless my meeting with you.
Bio-
Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman
Early
years in Medina:
At
Medina Huzaifah RA became an intimate of Rasulullah SAW,
participating in all the military engagements except Badr.
He participated in the Battle
of Uhud with
his father. Before the battle, Muhammad SAW left al-Yaman, Huzaifah's
father, and Thabit ibn Waqsh with the other non-combatants because
they were both quite old. As the fighting intensified, al-Yaman and
his friend decided that despite their age they did not want to miss
the opportunity to participate.
They quickly prepared for battle and were soon in the thick of the fighting. Thabit ibn Waqsh was killed at the hands of the mushrikin. The father of Huzaifah RA, however was set upon by some Muslims who did not recognize him. As they attacked him, Huzaifah cried out: "My father! My father! It's my father!" No one heard him and al-Yaman was killed in error. Grieved as he was, Huzaifah told his fathers killers: "May God forgive you for He is the most Merciful of those who show mercy."
Muhammad
SAW wanted diyah (compensation) to be paid to Huzaifah RA for
the death of his father but Huzaifah said: "He was simply
seeking shahadah and he attained it. O Lord, bear witness that I
donate the compensation for him to the Muslims."
The Hypocrites
Huzaifah RA had three qualities which particularly impressed Muhammad SAW; his unique intelligence, quick wittedness, and his ability to keep a secret even under persistent questioning. A notable policy of Muhammad SAW was to utilize the special strengths of each companion, carefully choosing the right man for the right task. A primary problem the Muslims encountered were hypocrites who had superficially accepted Islam while simultaneously plotting against the Muslim community. Because of Huzaifah's ability to keep a secret, Muhammad SAW told him the names of the hypocrites, a trust not bestowed upon others. Huzaifah RA was commissioned to watch their movements and follow their activities. The hypocrites, because their secrecy and intimate knowledge of the developments and plans of the Muslims, presented a greater threat to the community than external enemies. From this time onwards, Huzaifah RA was called The Keeper of the Secret of the Messenger of Allah, remaining faithful to his pledge of secrecy.
After
Muhammad's SAW demised, the Khalifah often sought his advice
concerning their activities but he remained tight-lipped. Umar,
during his Khilafat was only able to find out indirectly who the
hypocrites were by monitoring Huzaifah’s attendance at the funeral
prayer following the death of a Muslim. If Huzaifah did not attend
Umar RA refrained from performing the funeral prayer for that person.
Once Umar RA asked Huzaifah RA if any of his governors was a munafiq.
Hudhayfah told him that one was but declined to inform whom. Huzaifah
RA later said that shortly after their conversation Umar RA dismissed
the person as if he had been guided to him.
Battle
of the Ditch
Muslims
continued their siege for many days and were getting tired. Ali
bin Abi Talib RA and
Az-Zubair
bin
‘Awwam RA proceeded with ‘Ali swearing that he would never stop
until he had either stormed their garrisons or been martyred like
Hamza RA . Muhammad
SAW meanwhile asked one of his poets, Hasam bin Thabit to abuse them
with his poems. This is mentioned in Sunni hadith collections:
|
“Abuse
them (with your poems), and Gabriel is with you (i.e, supports
you)." (Through another group of sub narrators) Al-Bara bin
Azib said, "On the day of Quraiza's (besiege), Allah's
Apostle said to Hassan bin Thabit, 'Abuse them (with your poems),
and Gabriel is with you (i.e. supports you).' " Sahih
al-Bukhari,5:59:449
