Ziyad bin Labid رضي الله عنه

(Illustration Only)

Another Companion of Rasulullah was Ziyad bin Labid رضي الله عنه. His mother’s name was Amrah bint Abid Matroof. Ziyad bin Labid رضي الله عنه had a son called Abdullah. Ziyad bin Labid رضي الله عنه accepted Islam during the second pledge of Aqabah along with 70 Companions. On his return to Madinah after accepting Islam, Ziyad bin Labid رضي الله عنه broke the idols of his tribe Banu Bayada which they used to worship.

Ziyad bin Labid رضي الله عنه then traveled to Rasulullah in Makkah and remained there until Rasulullahﷺ migrated to Madinah. So he too migrated after Rasulullah had reached. This is why Ziyad bin Labid رضي الله عنه. is renowned as a Muhajir Ansari. He was a Muhajir [one who migrated from Makkah and an Ansari [native of Madinah too. Ziyad bin Labid رضي الله عنه. fought alongside Rasulullah in the Battle of Badr, the Battle of Uhud, the Battle of the Ditch, and all other battles of Rasulullah.

After migrating to Madinah, Rasulullah was passing by the quarters of Banu Bayada, so Ziyad bin Labid رضي الله عنه. greeted him saying, “Ahlan wa sahlan” and offered his home for him to stay. Rasulullah said to let his camel loose, it will find its home by itself.

Services during the time of Rasulullah and Khalifah Saiyidina Abu Bakar As Sidque رضي الله عنه.

In the Muharram of 9th Hijri, Rasulullah appointed different collectors for Sadaqah and Zakat, and Ziyad bin Labid رضي الله عنه. was appointed as the collector for the area of Ḥaḍhramaut. Ziyad bin Labid رضي الله عنه. continued his service there till the time of Khalifah Saiyidina Umar Ibn Al Khattab رضي الله عنه... After being relieved of his duty, he moved to Kufa and passed away in 41 Hijri.

It has been written down in history that when the uprising of apostasy [of certain tribes] had gained momentum during the Khilafat of Saiyidina Abu Bakar As Sidque رضي الله عنه.

And people refused to pay the Zakat, Asy'ats bin Qais رضي الله عنهAl-Kindi was also among those to become an apostate. Ziyad bin Labid رضي الله عنه. was appointed to confront him. When he went to attack him, he had taken refuge in the Naheer fortress. Ziyad bin Labid رضي الله عنه. had besieged them so severely to the point that he became distressed and sent a message that if he, along with nine other people, is granted safety, they would open the doors to the fortress.

Ziyad bin Labid رضي الله عنه. said to write down the agreement and bring it to him to stamp. Thereafter they opened the doors. Later on, when they checked the agreement, the names of the nine people were written down but Asy'ats bin Qais رضي الله عنه, forgot to write down his own name, so he was taken prisoner to Madinah with the rest of the captives.

"The Prophet (saw) mentioned something and said: 'That will be at the time when knowledge (of Quran) disappears.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, how will knowledge disappear when we read the Quran and teach it to our children, until the Day of Resurrection?' He said: 'May your mother be bereft of you, Ziyad! I thought that you were the wisest man in Al- Madinah. Is it, not the case that these Jews and Christians read the Tawrah and the Injil, but they do not act upon anything of what is in them?'"
