Sawad Bin Ghaziyyah رضي الله عنه "The Companion of Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ, Who Smiles When Death Comes"
Sawad Bin Ghaziyyah رضي الله عنه was one of the Ahlul Badr and was one of the few friends who met his martyrdom on the battlefield of the Battle of Badr. On the day of the battle, while the troops were preparing, Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ arranged the ranks and straightened them, just like when straightening the prayer rows. When he arrived at Sawad's place, he saw that his position had shifted, not aligned with the rest of the squad. Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ hit Sawad Bin Ghaziyyah رضي الله عنه in the stomach with an arrow while saying, "Straighten your lines, O Sawad...!!"
The friends became increasingly angry with Sawad's inappropriate attitude and will. But Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ still calmed them and fulfilled Sawad's request. After he removed his clothes, Sawad Bin Ghaziyyah رضي الله عنه immediately threw the arrow and hugged Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ's stomach tightly while crying happily, as well as apologizing to him. Once again Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ was shocked by Sawad Bin Ghaziyyah رضي الله عنه's unexpected action. He said, "What are you doing, Sawad….??"
But without anyone expecting it, Sawad Bin Ghaziyyah رضي الله عنه suddenly said, "O Messenger of Allah, you have hurt me, so give me a chance to repay you (qisash you)..!!"
The friends were shocked, and most of them were angry with Sawad Bin Ghaziyyah رضي الله عنه's words, especially Saiyidina Umar Ibn Al Khattab رضي الله عنه. Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ himself was actually surprised by this attitude, but he calmed them down. While handing over the arrow used to hit him, he said, "Then take revenge, O Sawad...!!"
While receiving an arrow from the hand of Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ, Sawad Bin Ghaziyyah رضي الله عنه said, "O Messenger of Allah, you hit me in the stomach which was not covered by a cloth, therefore you should take off your clothes...!!"
Sawad Bin Ghaziyyah رضي الله عنه said, "This is what I want, O Messenger of Allah, I have long wished that my humble skin could touch your noble skin, and I am grateful that I can do it, I hope this will be the last moments of my life with you...!!"
Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ smiled at Sawad Bin Ghaziyyah رضي الله عنه's answer because what he did was an expression of his love for Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ. Immediately he prayed for goodness and forgiveness for Sawad Bin Ghaziyyah رضي الله عنه.
When the fighting started to rage, Sawad Bin Ghaziyyah رضي الله عنه immediately rushed into the ranks of the polytheists, whose numbers were much larger, namely more than three times as many. With a very passionate spirit of jihad and the desire to achieve martyrdom in the way of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ, he attacked the enemy without the slightest fear.
Stabbing wounds and weapon cuts did not immediately stop him from blocking the attacks of the polytheists. Sawad Bin Ghaziyyah رضي الله عنه only stopped struggling when his legs were no longer able to support his body, his hands were no longer able to move the sword due to too many wounds and blood flowing from his body.
However, his mouth appeared to be smiling when his body collapsed to the ground because his soul was immediately greeted by angels who immediately ushered him into the presence of Allah سُبْحَانَهُۥ وَتَعَالَىٰ.
Another Story of Sawad Bin Ghaziyyah رضي الله عنه
It is narrated that Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ sent him as the collector of revenue in Khayber. He returned with excellent dates and Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ purchased around 3 kilograms of the high-quality dates from him in return for around 7 kilograms of normal dates.
Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ) liked the dates so he purchased them for their actual price by exchanging dates in return.
“It was Friday 17 Ramadan 2 A.H. or 14 March 623 A.D., according to the Christian calendar system. In the morning, Salat was first offered and then these worshippers of Divine Unity fell into prostration before the One God, in an open field. After this, Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ delivered an address on Jihad. When the light began to appear, Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ began to arrange the Muslim ranks with the indication of an arrow.
A Companion by the name of Sawad Bin Ghaziyyah رضي الله عنه was standing somewhat ahead of his row. Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ used his arrow to indicate that he should move back in line. It so happened, however, that the wooden part of the arrow belonging to Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ touched his chest, whereupon he boldly protested, ‘O Messenger of Allah! God has sent you with the truth and justice, but you have unjustly poked me with your arrow. By God, I insist upon retribution.’
The Companions were shocked, as to what had gotten into Sawad Bin Ghaziyyah رضي الله عنه. However, Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ stated with extreme affection, ‘Alright Sawaad, you may poke me with an arrow as well,’ and Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ lifted the cloth upon his chest. In his immense love, Sawaad stepped forward and kissed the chest of Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ. Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ smiled and enquired, ‘Why did you devise this plan?’ He responded with a trembling voice, ‘O Messenger of Allah! The enemy is before us. There is no telling whether I shall live to return or not. It was my desire, therefore, to touch your blessed body before my martyrdom.’”
Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ then prayed for his welfare.
