Here is the detailed biographical record of the esteemed Sahabi, Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (رضي الله عنه), covering his tribal lineage, conversion, personal traits, military history, and contribution to Hadith literature.

Clan, Tribe, and Ancestry;

Tribe: Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (رضي الله عنه) belonged to the prominent southern Arabian Azd super-tribe, specifically branching into the Ash'ar (al-Ash'ariyyun) tribe of Yemen.

Bani (Clan): Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (رضي الله عنه) hailed from the Bani al-Ash'ar, a lineage tracing back to Nabt bin Udad. The tribe was historically situated in the coastal regions of western Yemen (Zabid and Rima).

Name Ambiguity: Because Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (رضي الله عنه) was predominantly known by his Kunya (Abu Malik), biographical historians like Ibn Hajar and Ibn Abd al-Barr noted multiple variations for his actual name, the most widely accepted being Ka'ab bin Asim or Al-Harith bin Asim al-Ash'ari.

Embracing Islam;

Abu Malik al-Ash'ari embraced Islam during the late Madinan period, around 7 AH (628 CE).

The Boat of the Ash'arites: Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (رضي الله عنه) accepted Islam in Yemen alongside his kinsmen, led by the renowned companion Abu Musa al-Ash'ari.

To join the Prophet ﷺ, a group of over 50 men from the Ash'ar tribe boarded a ship from Yemen. Due to heavy storms, their boat drifted off course and docked in Abyssinia (Ethiopia). There, they met the returning Muslim emigrants led by Ja'far bin Abi Talib. Together, they sailed to Madinah and reached the Prophet ﷺ right around the time of the victory at the Battle of Khaybar.

Prophetic Praise: Upon their arrival, the Prophet ﷺ deeply praised his tribe, stating: "The people of Yemen have come to you. They have the softest hearts and the gentlest souls. Faith is Yemeni, and wisdom is Yemeni."

Characters and Personal Traits;

Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (رضي الله عنه) was noted for the distinct characteristics that defined the Ash'ari clan, which the Prophet ﷺ openly admired:

Deep Altruism and Communal Bond: The Ash'arites were famous for their communal solidarity. The Prophet ﷺ famously said of them: "When the Ash'arites run short of food in battles or the food of their families in Madinah runs short, they collect all they have in one sheet and divide it equally among themselves. They are from me, and I am from them."

Sincere Devotion to Privacy in Worship: Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (رضي الله عنه) possessed a deep concern for the spiritual authenticity of the soul. Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (رضي الله عنه) once explicitly asked the Prophet ﷺ about what constitutes "perfect goodness." The response Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (رضي الله عنه) treasured and passed on was: "That you do in secret the good deeds you would openly do in front of people."

Asceticism and Discipline: Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (رضي الله عنه) narrations emphasize the constant spiritual struggle (Jihad al-Nafs), viewing every single day as a marketplace where a person either liberates or ruins their soul.

Significant Events and Sacrifices on the Battle Fronts;

Following his migration to Madinah, Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (رضي الله عنه) dedicated his life to defending the nascent Muslim state.

Late Ghazawat (Prophetic Battles): He took part in the military campaigns alongside the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ after the Year 7 AH, which included the Conquest of Mecca (Fath Makkah), the Battle of Hunayn, and the grueling expedition to Tabuk.

The Levant Conquests: After the passing of the Prophet ﷺ, Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (رضي الله عنه) moved to the Syrian front (Ash-Sham) under the Rashidun Caliphates of Abu Bakr and Umar ibn al-Khattab. He deployed to the front lines as a soldier and educator, teaching the newly conquered territories the pillars of Islam.

Martyrdom by Plague (18 AH / 639 CE): Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (رضي الله عنه) final stand was not against a physical army but a devastating pandemic. Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (رضي الله عنه) was struck down by the historic Plague of Amwas (Plague of Emmaus) in Syria. Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (رضي الله عنه) accepted his fate with patience, passing away in the same epidemic that claimed other military giants of the Levant, such as Abu Ubaidah ibn al-Jarrah and Muadh ibn Jabal.

Contributions to Islam & Hadith Narrations;

Abu Malik's legacy is preserved eternally in the foundational texts of Islamic Law (Sharia) and theology (Aqeedah).

Total Hadith Count: Compared to prolific narrators like Abu Hurairah, Abu Malik's preserved corpus is small but incredibly profound. He is credited with 27 Hadiths in total across major Islamic encyclopedias, with 7 primary core traditions frequently circulating as foundational maxims in Islamic legal theory.

The "Half of Faith" Legacy: His single most substantial contribution to Islamic literature is the preservation of Hadith No. 22 in Imam Al-Nawawi's Forty Hadiths Collection. In it, he recorded the Prophet's profound layout of daily spiritual life: "Purity is half of faith. 'Alhamdulillah' (Praise be to Allah) fills the scales... Prayer is a light, charity is a proof, patience is an illumination, and the Qur'an is an argument for you or against you..."

Both of the dynamic traditions you mentioned are preserved as cornerstones of Islamic character development. These narrations explicitly showcase Abu Malik al-Ash'ari's (رضي الله عنه) role in transmitting teachings that outline practical ethics and spiritual warnings.

The Four Remaining Traits of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah).

In this highly significant narration found in Sahih Muslim, Abu Malik al-Ash'ari reported that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ identified systemic pre-Islamic habits that would persist in human society.

The Prophet ﷺ warned:

"There are four traits remaining in my nation from the period of pre-Islamic ignorance (Jahiliyyah) which they cannot easily abandon:

1. Boasting over social status / lineage (Al-fakhr fi al-ahsab)

2. Disparaging or reviling the ancestry of others (Al-ta'n fi al-ansab)

3. Seeking rain by the movements of the stars (Al-istisqa' bi al-nujum—attributing natural blessings to astrology rather than God)

4. Wailing loudly over the deceased (Al-niyahah)."

He further added that if a person who practices professional wailing does not sincerely repent before their death, they will be resurrected on the Day of Judgment wearing garments of pitch and a coat of scabs. This tradition is heavily cited by scholars to address social arrogance, tribalism, and superstition.

The Translucent Chambers of Paradise (Jannah)

Abu Malik al-Ash'ari also preserved a beautiful description of the architecture of Paradise and the specific, simple actions required to inherit it. As recorded in the collections of Ibn Hibban and Imam Ahmad:

Abu Malik al-Ash'ari reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

"Verily, in Paradise there are lofty chambers whose outside can be seen from their inside, and whose inside can be seen from their outside."

Hearing this stunning description of translucent, glowing palaces, the companions asked: "Who are they for, O Messenger of Allah?"

The Prophet ﷺ replied: "Allah has prepared them for those who:

• Feed others (the hungry/poor)

• Spread the greetings of peace (Salaam)

• Speak mildly and gently to people

• Pray during the night while the rest of humanity sleeps."

3. Warning Against the Renaming of Vices

Another core, distinct warning transmitted by Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah) addresses societal moral decay:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "People among my nation will drink wine (alcohol), calling it by another name, and musical instruments will be played for them alongside singing girls. Allah will cause the earth to swallow them up, and will turn them into monkeys and pigs."

Through these narrations, Abu Malik's legacy focuses heavily on keeping the community tightly anchored to authenticity—urging believers to abandon ancestral arrogance, care for the vulnerable, and speak with profound gentleness.

Selected Hadith Narrated by Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (رضي الله عنه)

Abu Malik Al-Harith bin Asim Al-Ashari from Imam Nawawi's 40 hadith

Hadith No: 22
Narrated/Authority of Abu Malik Al-Harith bin Asim Al-Ashari
Listed in: An-Nawawi's 40 Hadith
said that the messenger of Allah said: "Purity is half of faith. alhamdu-lillah [Praise be to Allah] fills the scales, and subhana-Allah [How far is Allah from every imperfection] and alhamdu-lillah [Praise be to Allah] fill that which is between heaven and earth. Prayer is light; charity is a proof; patience is illumination; and the Quran is an argument for or against you. Everyone starts his day and is a vendor of his soul, either freeing it or bringing about its ruin." related by Muslim.
Among the hadith narrated by Abu Malik are the words of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
ليشرَبنَّ ناسٌ من عمَّتي
wine is called without its name,
يُعزَفُ على رءوسِهِم بالمعزفِ,
and the singersِ,
يخُفُ اللَّهُ بهِمُ الرزَ, ويجَعَلُ نهمُ القِرَدةَ وَلَنازیرَ
"It will definitely happen that there will be a person among my people, someone who drinks khamr. Then he will name it by something that is not his name. Musical instruments will be hit on their heads with female witches. God will bury them in the earth. And make some of them apes and pigs."
[Sahih Ibn Majah, 3263].
This hadith shows that everything mentioned above is unlawful. Then some legalize it. Then the Prophet also announced about the signs of the end.
Second: Other hadiths,
"There are four things in the midst of my people that are acts of ignorance but it is difficult for them to leave. Being proud of one's lineage. Blaming one's lineage. Asking for rain with the stars. And mourning death." He continued, "A person who mourns death if he does not repent before he dies, on the day of judgment he will be stood up on the day of judgment and he will be dressed in pants and melted asphalt and put on a kurung shirt from germs."
[HR. Muslim in his Sahih No: 934].
The age of ignorance has passed. But some of the characteristics of jahiliyyah still exist until now. And the Prophet also reminded that mourning death is not a light problem. The Prophet mentions specific threats that indicate that it is a major sin.
Third: It was also narrated from Abu Malik al-Ash'ari, may God bless him and grant him peace, that the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said,
If there is a guest in Paradise, he will see its appearance from the inside, and its inside from its appearance.
"Truly in heaven there are rooms whose outside can be seen from the inside. And the inside can be seen from the outside. Allah 'Azza wa Jalla prepared it for those who feed, fast, and pray at night when people are asleep."
[HR. al-Baihaqi in Syu'abul Iman].
Heaven is the highest ideal of a Muslim. Its beauty is truly unimaginable. And the Prophet motivated, among the practices that can enter a person into heaven and then enjoy various things in it by feeding others, fasting routine, and night prayers.
Fourth: From Abu Malik al-Ash'ari, he said,
They are the servants of God from the country of shatَّ ى وَقَبَائِلَ shatَّ ى, مِن شُعُوبِ The Prophet did not have mercy on them, nor did the world follow him, they loved the Spirit of God. مَنَابِرَ مِنْ نورٍ, وَيَجْعَلُ وُجوهَهُمْ light on the day of resurrection يَخَافُونَ
"They were once with the Messenger of Allah. Then the Prophet told about a group of people; they are not prophets and martyrs. But the prophets are envious (ghibtah) of their position close to Allah on the Day of Resurrection. Then the Prophet said, 'They are servants of Allah who come from religious lands and tribes. They come from tribes and tribes that do not have kinship ties. Not even having a mutually granted world between them. But they love each other because of God. God gave them pulpits made of light. Make their faces shine on the day of judgment. They came to meet Allah Ar-Rahman. In that condition, people tremble while they don't. People are scared but they are not.”
[Al-Uluw, No: 100. According to adz-Dzahabi the chain of this hadith is good].
This hadith shows how important love and hate are because of Allah Ta'ala. This practice will bring great good in this world and the hereafter. A practice of the heart whose benefit makes the prophets amazed at the position of the perpetrator in the afterlife. The Prophets also desired the position they found.
This hadith shows the breadth of God's mercy. A person who has nothing, is poor and cannot give. Or someone who is disabled so that he cannot do great practices. They can still defeat the rich and the brave. With what? With the practice of their hearts. That is, God opens opportunities for His servants to achieve a high position in the afterlife.
Fifth: From Abdurrahman bin Ghanam, Abu Malik al-Ash'ari relayed a hadith to him from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
اسباغُ الوودوِ شترُ اليمانِ, and praise be to God, and praise and glory fill the heavens and the earth, and prayer is light, and charity is proof, and patience is charity, and the Qur’an is proof for you or for you.
"Performing ablution is half faith. Saying Alhamdulillah fills the scales. Saying tasbih (subhanallah) and Takbir (Allahu akbar) fills the sky and the earth. Prayer is light. Zakat is proof of faith. While patience is a light that burns. And the Qur'an is a proof that will help you or even judge you." [Sahih an-Nasai, No: 2436].
This hadith discusses the main teachings of Islam. In it, the Prophet mentions important things that are the needs of Muslims in this world and the hereafter.
Sixth: Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (رضي الله عنه) said, the Messenger of Allah said,
Allah said: Whoever is sent abroad in the way of a Ghazi, who obeys my face, believes in my promise, and has faith in my salvation, he is a guarantee to Allah, either he dies in the army in any way He wills, and he will enter Paradise, and whether he dies in the army in any way He wills, he will enter Paradise. Allah is a martyr
"Indeed, God has said that whoever sets out to fight in My way, fights for Me, and fulfills My promise and faith in My messengers, then he is in the guarantee of God. Sometimes God dies in that army, then God puts him in heaven. And sometimes he returns in the guarantee of God, even if he travels far and disappears for a long time, until God returns him to his family along with what he has earned in the form of rewards and booty."
The Prophet also said, "Whoever sets out in the path of God, then dies. Or is killed. Or is kicked by his horse. Or by his camel. Or is stung by an insect. Or dies on his bed in whatever manner of death God wills, then he is a martyr."
[Mu'jam al-Kabir, 3418].
Seventh: From Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (رضي الله عنه), the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said,
التُّحُورُ شَطْرُ إيمانِ, والَْحْمْدُ لِلَّهِ تَمْلَاُ المِيزانَ, وسُبحانَ اللهِ والْحْمْدُ لَلَّهِ تَمْلَانِ -اْ تَمْلُ- what is between the heavens and the earth, and the prayer is light, And charity is proof, and patience is proof, and the Qur’an is a proof for you, or for you, all people are righteous, and they are faithful to it, or to support it.
"Cleanliness is part of faith. Saying alhamdulillah fills the scale. Saying subhanallah and alhamdulillah both fill the heavens and the earth. Prayer is light. Charity is proof of faith. Patience is a burning light. And the Qur'an is a proof that will defend you or judge you. Every human soul does charity to sell itself, so some of them free it (from Allah's punishment) and some others plunge it (into His punishment)."
[HR. Muslim in his Sahih No: 223].
Subhanallah and Alhamdulillah words are of great value. Until it can fill the sky and the earth. But practicing it is a matter of taufik from God. With this great priority, it turns out that we still see many people leaving this dhikr after finishing their prayers.
His death;
Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (رضي الله عنه) is a friend who always advises for the sake of Allah Ta'ala. Among his proofs, at the end of his life, he did this. Show this is the habit of his life. Shuraih bin Ubaid narrated, "At the end of his life, Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (رضي الله عنه) said to his people, 'O people of Ash'ar, those who are present here should convey to those who are not present. Indeed I heard the Messenger of Allah, may God bless him and grant him peace, say,
The sweetness of the end of the world and the sweetness of the end of the world
"The sweetness of the world is the bitterness of the hereafter. And the bitterness of the world is the sweetness of the afterlife."
[HR Ahmad, At-Tabrani in Al-Kabir, Al-Hakim in Al-Mustadrak and Al-Baihaqi from Abu Malik Al-Ash'ari, according to Imam Suyuti this hadith is authentic].
Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (رضي الله عنه) died during the reign of Umar bin al-Khattab, may God be pleased with him. Syahr bin Hausyab said, from Ibn Ghanam that Muadz bin Jabal, Abu Ubaidah, and Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (رضي الله عنه) died because they died because of plague. Namely the plague of tha'un amwas during the reign of Umar bin al-Khattab. Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (رضي الله عنه) died in the year 18 H.
