Qays ibn Sa'dرضي الله عنه  was born in Madinah around the time of Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ. His father was Sa'd ibn Ubadahرضي الله عنه, the leader of the Khazraj tribe.

Khalid Muhammad Khalid, an Egyptian religious scholar, remarks that Qays ibn Sa'dرضي الله عنه was said to be very cunning before his conversion to Islam. Khalid states that he would use his cunning to short-change the people of Madinah and its surrounding

Qais’ mother’s name was Shaibah bint Asim. Qays ibn Sa'dرضي الله عنه participated in the Bai‘at that took place at Aqabah along with seventy Ansar. He also had the honor of participating in the Battles of Badr and Uhud

Qays ibn Saʿdرضي الله عنه  (Arabic: قيس بن سعد) was a prominent leader of the Muslim army who was known for his use of defensive tactics in battles. He was one of the companions of the Islamic prophet Muhammad Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ as well as Ali ibn Abi Talibرضي الله عنه.

After Sa'dرضي الله عنه converted to Islam, he introduced Qays ibn Saʿdرضي الله عنه to Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ. Sa'd tells Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ,

"This is your servant from now on."

Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ was pleased with Qays  and told him,

"This place will always be yours for the rest of your life."

Khalid remarks that when Qays ibn Saʿdرضي الله عنه embraced Islam, he completely changed his life, attitude, vision, and disposition. Khalid states that through Islam, Qays ibn Saʿdرضي الله عنه learned how to treat people with sincerity and not resort to deceit. He goes on to note that Qays ibn Saʿdرضي الله عنه abandoned all his cunning in dealing with people and devoted himself to becoming a true and sincere Muslim. He continues to say that there were still moments in his life when Qays ibn Saʿdرضي الله عنه was tempted to continue deceiving people. But, Qays' devotion to Islam helped him overpower the temptations. Qays ibn Saʿdرضي الله عنه himself stated,

"If it were not for Islam I would have used my craftiness to outwit all the Arabs."

"If I did not hear the Prophet say craftiness and deceit reside in hell, I would have been the craftiest man of the nation.

Qays ibn Saʿdرضي الله عنه was given the title al-Ansari(الانصاري), which means 'the helper' or 'the supporter' in Arabic.

Khalid writes that Qays ibn Saʿdرضي الله عنه' family was known for their generosity. Khalid remarks that Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ praised them by stating,

"Generosity is the dominant trait of this family."

Khalid notes that Qays ibn Saʿdرضي الله عنه would inherit his family's generosity and that his generosity surpassed his cleverness. Furthermore, Khalid states that Qays was also known for his charity. Khalid documents that Saiyidina Abu Bakr As Sidique   رضي الله عنه  and Saiyidina Umar Ibn Al Khattab  رضي الله عنه  once stated,

"If we let this lad give free rein to his generosity, he would exhaust his father’s wealth." When his father, Sa'd ibn Ubadahرضي الله عنهheard their comments he replied: "Abu Quhaafah and Ibn al-Khattab should not have tried to encourage my son to become a miser."

Khalid remarks that to demonstrate Qays ibn Saʿdرضي الله عنه' generosity, Qays ibn Saʿdرضي الله عنه lent a person in debt a large sum of money. When it came time for the debtor to repay, Qays ibn Saʿdرضي الله عنه refused to take the money back and stated,

"I never take back anything that I have given."

Khalid notes that Qays ibn Saʿdرضي الله عنه had characteristics of a leader except for a traditional Arab beard, saying the Ansar used to tease Qays ibn Saʿdرضي الله عنه by saying,

"If only we could buy him a beard."

When Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ departed for the Battle of Badr, he, along with his army, camped at Buyut as-Suqya, located on the outskirts of Madinah. Some minors, eager to accompany Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ, who had also come along, were sent back from there. Then Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ ordered his companions to fetch water from the well at Suqya. He drank from its water and then offered the prayer near the houses of Suqya. When departing from Suqya, Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ ordered Qays ibn Saʿdرضي الله عنه to take a count of the Muslims.

On that occasion, he was also appointed to oversee the arrangements for water. After that, Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ himself stayed near the well at Bir-e-Abi Inaba, located about 2.5 kilometers from the Prophet’s Mosque. Upon receiving the instruction from Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ to count the number of people, Qays ibn Saʿdرضي الله عنه counted them and submitted to the Messenger (sa) of Allah that their number was 313. Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ was pleased to hear this number and said that the companions of Talut also numbered the same.

The Well of Suqiya

According to the note written concerning Suqya, it was located about two kilometers from the Prophet’s Mosque. Its previous name was Husaiqa.  Khallad رضي الله عنه narrates that Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ changed its name from Husaiqa to Suqya. He states, “I wished to purchase Suqya but  Sa‘d bin Waqas رضي الله عنه had already bought it in return for two camels.” According to some, he bought it for seven Auqiyah i.e. 280 Dirhams. When this was mentioned to Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ, he said his trade was very profitable.

Similarly, during the Battle of Badr, Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ appointed him as the leader of the Saaqah. Saaqah is a part of the army that follows behind for protection. On one occasion, he said to Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ, “O Prophet (sa) of Allah! In how many days should I complete the recitation of the entire Quran?” Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ replied, “In fifteen nights.” Qays ibn Saʿdرضي الله عنه said, “I find myself capable of doing more than this.” Upon this, Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ said, “You may complete it in the duration of one Friday to the next.” To this, he said, “I find myself capable of doing even more than this.” Following this, he recited the Holy Quran in this very manner for a long time. He continued with this practice till he grew old and had to cover his eyes with a piece of cloth. He then began to complete the recitation of the entire Quran in fifteen days. At that time, he used to say, “If only I had accepted the concession granted by Rasulullahصَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِۦ وَسَلَّمَ.”

Qais had two children, Alfakeh and Umme Harith. They were both born to Amama bint Mu‘az. The progeny and offspring of Qays ibn Saʿdرضي الله عنه did not continue further. Qays ibn Saʿdرضي الله عنه had three brothers, all of whom had the blessed opportunity of spending time in the company of the Holy Prophet (sa). However, they were unable to participate in the Battle of Badr. From among them, Hazrat Harith (ra) was martyred in the Battle of Yamama, and Abu Kilaab رضي الله عنه and Jabir رضي الله عنه bin Abi Sa‘sa were martyred in the Battle of Mut'ah.
