Ka’b bin Zuhair bin Abi Sulma.
Ka‘b ibn Zuhair (Arabic: كعب
بن زهير) was an Arabian poet of
the 7th century, and a contemporary of Rasulullah SAW to Ka’b.
Poets from the time of Jahiliyyah. |
Abdur Rahman bin Ka'b narrates
that the two sons of Zuhair who were Bujair and Ka'b left on a journey and had
reached a spring called Abraqal Azzaaf. Bujair then said to Ka'b, "Stay
here with t'he animals. I am going to see that person (Rasulullah) and hear
what he has to say." Ka'b stayed and Bujair left to meet Rasulullah SAW.
Rasulullah SAW presented Islam to him and he accepted. When the news reached
Ka'b, he recited a few couplets which mean:
"Will you not convey this
message to Bujair, who be another Abu Bakr .what has he led you? He has led you
to a way on which you will not find your parents. Neither wiII you find your brother,
Abu Bakr has made you drink from a terrible cup.
That slave has made you drink
from it time and time again" When Rasulullah SAW heard about these couplets,
he permitted Ka'b's execution when he said, "Whoever finds Ka'b should
kill him!" Bujair wrote to Ka'b informing him that Rasulullah SAW had
ordered his execution. He also wrote, "Save yourself! However, I do not
think that you will be able to escape."
Bujair later wrote back to Ka'b
saying, "Rasulullah SAW accepts the word of anyone who comes to him to
testify that there is none worthy of worship but Allah and that Muhammad is Allah's
Rasul. You should therefore accept Islam and come here as soon as this letter reaches
you." Ka'b accepted Islam and recited a poem in praise of Rasulullah SAW.
Ka’b then came to Madinah and sat
his mount down at the door of the Masjid. He then entered the Masjid where he
found Rasulullah SAW sitting in the middle of the Sahabah SAW just as a
tablecloth is placed at the center with people sitting around it. The Sahabah
'- thronged around Rasulullah SAW forming several rings. At times, he turned
towards a group while addressing them and at other times he turned towards another
group.
Ka’b himself says, "I sat my
mount down at the door of the, masjid and recognized Rasulullah SAW by his
features. I took a few steps forward and sat by him where I declared that I had
accepted Islam when I said, 'I testify that there is none worthy of worship but
Allah and that you are Allah's Rasul.
I seek amnesty, 0 Rasulullah SAW!"
Rasulullah asked, 'Who are you?" "I am Ka'b bin Zuhair."
Rasulullah SAW said, 'Was it you who said ..." He then turned to Saidina
Abu Bakr RA and asked, 'What was it that he said, 0 Abu Bakr?" Saidina Abu
Bakr RA recited the couplet which meant, Saidina Abu Bakr RA has made you drink
from a terrible cup. That slave has made you drink from it time and time again.
"
Ka'b - interjected by saying, "I did not say it like
this, 0 Rasulullah SAW.
"Then how did you say it?" asked Rasulullah SAW.
Ka'b said, "I said (he then altered a few words to compose a couplet which
meant) “Abu Bakr has made you drink from a quenching cup. That trustworthy man
has made you drink from it time and time again.
“Rasulullah SAW then said, "By Allah! He certainly is a
trustworthy man."
Ka’b then recited the entire poem he had composed, which
will be quoted shortly. Musa bin Aqba RA says that Ka'b bin Zuhair RA recited his poem
"Baanat Su’aad" to Rasulullah SAW in his Masjid in Madinah until he reached
the couplets which meant:
"Without doubt, Rasulullah SAW’s sword from which light is derived.
And a drawn rapier from amongst the swords of Maah.
He was with some youths of the Quraish who had accepted Islam
When one of them said (to the Kuffaar), Move out of the
way!"
Rasulullah SAW then signaled to the Sahabah RA with his
sleeve for them to listen attentively.
The narrator says that Bujair RA had written to his brother Ka'b
to warn him and to invite him to accept Islam. He also wrote a few couplets in
the letter which meant:
'Who will convey the message to
Ka'b?
Is he inclined towards that which he
wrong & criticized whereas it is most resolute
Come to the One Allah and not
towards Uzza nor Laat
Then you will attain salvation if you
do this and will remain safe
You will then attain salvation on
the day when none shall escape
From the Fire except the pure-hearted
Muslim
The religion of (our father) Zuhair
is nothing but falsehood
And the relgion of (ourgrandfather) Abi
Sulma is forbidden to me"

The Poet of Arab Jahiliyyah embrace Islam
When Rasulullah SAW, returned
from AtTa'if, Ka‘b bin Zuhair, a poet and son of a poet, who had dispraised
him, came to him after he was desperate and had no place to go. His brother,
Bujair, urged him to go to Rasulullah SAW, as a repentant person and a Muslim,
and warned him against the evil end he might face if he refused.
Accordingly, he said his
wellknown poem in praise of Rasulullah SAW, then, moved to Madinah. The
following morning, he joined Rasulullah SAW, after finishing the Fajr prayer,
sat beside him and held his hand. All this took place while Rasulullah SAW, did
not know who he was. He said to Rasulullah SAW, “Ka‘b bin Zuhair has come to
you as a repentant Muslim, seeking your protection. Do you accept him?”
A man from the Ansar (helpers)
jumped onto Ka‘b and said, “O Rasulullah! Leave me alone with this enemy of Allah;
Let me cut of his head!” Rasulullah SAW, ordered the man to let go of him as he
came to express his repentance. Upon that, Ka‘b recited his poem in praise of Rasulullah
SAW.
It was narrated that when Ka‘b
narrated his poem,Rasulullah SAW, gave him his cloak that was thereafter
transferred to the caliphs.
(Ibn Kathir, may Allah have mercy upon him, said, “This is a very famous
narration, but I did not find it in any of the wellknown books so that I could
approve its chain of narrators. Allah knows best.”)
It was reported that Rasulullah
SAW, said to Ka‘b after this: “I wish you would speak well of the Ansar; Indeed
the Ansar are with the conversion of Ka‘b bin Zuhair to Islam, the role of the
poets who opposed the Islamic Da‘wah (call) came to an end. Dhiraar bin
AlKhattab, ‘Abdullaah bin AzZiba‘ra, Abu Sufyaan bin AlHarith bin Hisham and
Al‘Abbas bin Mirdas all embraced Islam and joined the Muslim ranks. They lived
under the shelter of Islam with conviction and firm faith. A group of them did
not suffice with dedicating their words to defending Islam, but they also used
their swords side by side with their words. This was part of the blessings of
the Conquest of Makkah.

Qasidah written by Ka'b bin Zuhair
bin Abi Sulma entitled "Baanat Su’aad” called Qasidah Burdah. Be Qasidah
the ' sunna taqririyah ' . The scholars from time to time Qasidah Burdah
memorized and taught to students because they are included in Qasidah Arabic
fusha and dazzling literary high level.
Qasidah Burdah al - Bushairi -
Imam al - Bushairi is a poet who lived in the 8th century Hijrah. He comes from
the Shaidi, Egypt. He is a follower of the congregation Syadiziliyah. When he

- Bushairi renowned throughout the world. Qasidah Burdah call society , but
essentially Qasida al - Bushairi is Qaidah BUR'AH which means healing . Qasidah
Burdah is actually a poem written by Ka'b bin Zuhair bin Abi Sulma . Wallahu ‘alam
The Burdah Ka'b bin Zuhair RA
The three most famous versifiers
among the sahaba (companions) were Hassaan bin Thabit RA, Ka'b bin Malik RA and
'Abdallah ibn Rawaha RA. After 'Abdullah ibn Rawaha RA was martyred at Mu'tah,
another poet, Ka'b bin Zuhair who previously used to satirize against the
Muslims, now accepted Islam and recited an ode which he had especially composed
for the occasion. It is known as Baanat Su'aad and has been included in the
kitab (book) titled Baaqatun 'Atirah (The Perfumed Bouquet, p. 199-201) by Imam
As-Sayyid Muhammad bin 'Alawi al-Maliki. It is his longest qasida with 58
verses all of which rhyme in the letter "laam", hence it is a
"laamiyyah". Four of these verses have become so popular that they
are quoted by many scholars in their books. Their transliteration and
translation is:
Inna'r Rasula lasaifun
yustadaau bihi
Muhannadun min Suyufillahi
maslulu
Fee fityatin min Quraysh-in
qaala qaailuhum
Bibatni Makkata lamma
aslamu zulu
Zaalu fama zaala ankaasun
walaa kushufun
'Indalliqaai walaa meelu
ma'aazeelu
Shummul 'araaneeni abtaalun
labusuhum
Min nasji Dawud-a fi'l
hayjaa saraabeelu
The Messenger a light is,
source of light,
An Indian blade, a drawn
sword of God's swords,
Amid Quraysh companions.
When they chose
Islam in Mecca's vale, men
said, "Be gone!"
They went, not weaklings,
not as men that flee,
Swaying upon their mounts
and poorly armed,
But heroes proud and noble
of mien, bright-clad
In mail of David's weave
for the encounter.
When Ka'b RA had finished
reciting the poem, our beloved Rasulullah SAW drew off his burdah (cloak) and
put it over his shoulders in appreciation, and it became the most valuable
piece of clothing ever since, informs Imam Shihabuddin as-Suhrawardi (passed
away 632 A.H/1235 C.E) in his spiritual classic 'Awaarif u'l Ma'aarif (The
Illuminative Knowledge of the Spiritual Masters, p. 158).
Lyric of Qasidah Burdah |
For this reason, the Baanat
Su'aad is called the original "Burdah", distinct from the famous
Burda tu'l Madeeh of Imam Sharafuddin Muhammad al-Busiri (608-695 A.H/1212-1296
C.E), who also received a Burda from the noble Prophet Sallallahu 'alayhi wa
Sallam in a dream after he had composed a qasida in his praise.
After listening to the Baanat
Su'aad in which the Muhajireen (Emigrants) had been praised by Ka'b RA, the
beloved Rasulullah SAW agreed with the Ansar (Helpers) that it was only fair
that he should versify on them too. Ka'b RA obliged by composing a
"raaiyyah" in praise of the Ansar with 33 verses all rhyming in the
letter "raa" whose opening verse is:
Man sarrahu karamu'l
hayaati falaa yazal
Fee miqnabin min saalihi'l Ansari
Whoever loves a life of
generosity, doesn't leave
The horsemen of the
virtuous from the Ansar
Hadrat Ka'b bin Zuhair RA composed many qasaaid, all of which have been
presented alphabetically in his Diwan (Collected Poems), beginning with the
qasaaid that rhyme in the letter "alif'". Imam Abu Sa'id al-Hasan
al-Husayn al-Sukkari (212-275 A.H/827-888 C.E) has written a sharh
(appreciation) of this Diwan, published by al-Maktabatul 'Arabiyyah in Cairo.
Another famous Diwan of a sahabi
(companion) is the Diwan Ka'b ibn Malik al-Ansari RA. The Diwans classify the
qasaaid (poems) by sadru'l bayt (the first word of the opening verse), qaafiyah
(rhyme) and bahr (poetical meter). The most popular poetical meters at that
time were at-taweel, al-baseet, al-kaamil and ar-rajaz; while al-khafeef,
al-waafir, and al-mutaqaarib were also used. When we go through these Diwans,
we come to the inevitable conclusion that qasaaid (religious poetry) really and
truly flourished in the time of our beloved Rasulullah Al Mustafa SAW.
