Jabir’s bin Abdullah RA – A Fighter and Ahlul Hadith

When the battle of Uhud was over, the Sahabah returned to Madinah Munawwarah. Due to the journey and the battle, they were very tired. The Quraish, on their way back to Makkah Mukarramah, were camping at a place called Hamra- ul Asad. Their chief, Abu Sufyan, sat in a meeting with his chiefs. They said among themselves: "The Muslims are defeated in Uhud. Their morale must be very low. This is the best time to finish Muhammad." They therefore, decided to return and attack Madinah Munawwarah. When Rasulullah SAW received reports about this meeting, he ordered all those Sahabah who had participated in Uhud, and who had just returned from the battle, to move out of Madinah Munawwarah and meet the enemy on the way. Jabir RA came to Nabi SAW and said: "O, Rasulullah SAW! I was very eager to fight in Uhud, but my father prevented me from going, on the excuse that there was no other member in the house to look after my seven sisters and only one of us could join the battle. As he had made up his mind to go, he asked me to remain with the family. He has been killed in Uhud. Now I am very eager to go with you and fight the Quraish." Rasulullah SAW allowed him to go. He was the only person in that battle who had not fought in Uhud. Jabir's father was made shahid in Uhud. He left Jabir RA a big family to look after and large debts to clear, with nothing to live on. The debts were due to one of the Jews, who as we know hardly ever have any soft spot in their hearts for their debtors. His seven sisters, also for whose sake he was not allowed to go to Uhud, were still there to be looked after. Now look! In spite of all these difficulties, Jabir RA requests Rasulullah SAW for permission to go to the battle. His spirit is really wonderful!

'Ali RA said, "I have assumed Ihram for what the Prophet SAW has done." The Prophet SAW ordered his companions to perform the 'Umra with the lhram which they had assumed, and after finishing Tawaf (of Kaaba, Safa and Marwa) to cut short their hair, and to finish their lhram except those who had Hadi with them. They (the people) said, "How can we proceed to Mina (for Hajj) after having sexual relations with our wives?" When that news reached the Prophet SAW he said, "If I had formerly known what I came to know lately, I would not have brought the Hadi with me. Had there been no Hadi with me, I would have finished the state of lhram." 'Aisha RA got her menses, so she performed all the ceremonies of Hajj except Tawaf of the Kaaba, and when she got clean (from her menses), she performed Tawaf of the Kaaba. She said, "O Rasulullah SAW! (All of you) are returning with the Hajj and 'Umra, but I am returning after performing Hajj only." They asked, "Shall we go to Mina and the private organs of some of us are dribbling (if we finish Ihram and have sexual relations with our wives)?"

The Prophet SAW heard that and said, "Had I known what I know now, I would not have brought the Hadi. If I did not have the Hadi with me I would have finished my Ihram." Aisha got her menses and performed all the ceremonies (of Hajj) except the Tawaf . So when she became clean from her menses, and she had performed the Tawaf of the Kaaba, she said, "O Rasulullah SAW! My father was martyred on the day (of the battle) of Uhud, and he was in debt. His creditors demanded their rights persistently. I went to Rasulullah SAW (and informed him about it). He told them to take the fruits of my garden and exempt my father from the debts but they refused to do so. So, Rasulullah SAW did not give them my garden and told me that he would come to me the next morning. He came to us early in the morning and wandered among the date palms and invoked Allah SWT to bless their fruits. I then plucked the dates and paid the creditors, and there remained some of the dates for us.

When my father died he owed a Jew thirty Awsuq (of dates). I requested him to give me respite for repaying but he refused. I requested Rasulullah SAW to intercede with the Jew. Rasulullah SAW went to the Jew and asked him to accept the fruits of my trees in place of the debt but the Jew refused. Rasulullah SAW entered the garden of the date-palms, wandering among the trees and ordered me (saying), "Pluck (the fruits) and give him his due." So, I plucked the fruits for him after the departure of Rasulullah SAW and gave his thirty Awsuq, and still had seventeen Awsuq extra for myself. Jabir said: I went to Rasulullah SAW to inform of what had happened, but found him praying the 'Asr prayer. After the prayer I told him about the extra fruits which remained. Rasulullah SAW told me to inform (Umar) Ibn Al-Khatab about it. When I went to 'Umar and told him about it, 'Umar said, "When Rasulullah SAW walked in your garden, I was sure that Allah would definitely bless it."

Bio of Jabir Al Ansari RA

Jabir ibn 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn Haram al-Ansari (Arabcجابر بن عبدالله بن عمرو بن حرام الأنصاريDied 697

Jabir ibn Abdullah al-Ansari was born in Yathrib (now known as Medina) 15 years before the Hijra. He belonged to a poor family of Yathrib. He was from the tribe of Khazraj. His mother was Nasiba bint Uqba ibn Uddi. His father was married to his paternal cousin.

Muhammad's Era

Jabir ibn Abdullah Ansari is said to have accepted Islam when he was a young boy.
His participation in the Battle of Badr is questioned by some historians; he is known to have fought in 19 battles (including Badr) under command of Muhammad, and was a trusted Sahaba. He was present during the conquest of Mecca.

Battle of Uhud

In the Battle of Uhud, Jabir ibn Abdullah was not allowed by his father Abdullah to take part in Jihad. Jabir had seven sisters (some historians say nine) and Abdullah wanted him to take care of his family. So instead of fighting, Jabir served the thirsty soldiers. Abdullah Ansari (Jabir’s father) was killed in the Battle of Uhud Sahih Bukhari along with his brother-in-law, Amro bin Jamuh, both having reached nearly 100 years of age.

Ali ibn Abu Talib era

He fought in all the three major civil wars fought with Imam Ali, Battle of Jamal,Battle of Sifeen, and Battle of Nahrawan.

Husain ibn Ali (ibn Abu Talib) era

Due to old age and blindness, Jabir was unable to participate in the Battle of Karbala (October 10, 680) wherein the grandson of Muhammad, Hussain ibn Ali was martyred. However, he did establish the practice of marking Arba'een.
He paid a visit to the grave of Imam Husain ibn Ali in Karbala, along with one of his companions, Attiya ibn Saad ibn Junadah (a scholar). Jabir ibn Abdullah recited a ziaraat there that is known as Ziaraat-e-Arba'een.

Ali ibn Husayn's (ibn Ali)

Jabir had a long life and became blind in his old age. But he devoutly waited for the time when he would meet the fifth Imam. Each morning he would come out from his house, sit by the roadside and wait for the sound of the footsteps to recognize the fifth Imam. One such day while he was waiting in the street of Medina, he heard someone walking towards him, the sound of footsteps reminded him of the way Muhammad used to walk. Jabir stood up, stopped the man and asked his name. He replied, “Muhammad”, Jabir asked, “whose son”? He replied “Ali ibn Hussain”. Jabir immediately recognized the man he was talking to was the 5th Imam. He kissed his hands and conveyed the message of Muhammad.

Abd al-Malik's era and Jabir’s death

It was during this era that he retold the Hadith of Umar's speech of forbidding Mut'ah. Jabir had a very long life. He was poisoned by Al-Hajjaj bin Yousef Thaqfin the age of 94 years because of his loyalty to Ahl al-Bayt and was buried in Madain near Baghdad at the bank of river Tigris. He died in 78 AH (697)

SAHABA FRESH IN THEIR GRAVES

1.

Yahya (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) related to me from Malik (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) from Abd ar-Rahman ibn Abi Sasaca(رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) that he had heard that Amr Ibn al-Jamuh al-Ansari (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) and Abdullah Ibn Umar al-Ansari (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ), both of the tribe of Banu Salami, had their Grave uncovered by a flood. Their Grave was part of what was left after the flood. They were in the same Grave, and they were among those martyred at Uhud. They were dug up so that they might be moved. They were found unchanged. It was as if they had died only the day before. One of them had been wounded, and he had put his hand over his wound and had been buried like that. His hand was pulled away from his wound and released, and it returned to where it had been. It was forty-six years between Uhud and the day they were dug up. Malik (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) said, "There is no harm in burying two or three men in the same Grave due to necessity. The oldest one is put next to the qibla." (Malik's Muwatta - Book #21, Hadith #21.20.50).

2.

Narrated Jabir (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ): When the time of the Battle of Uhud approached, my father called me at night and said, "I think that I will be the first amongst the companions of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) to be martyred. I do not leave anyone after me dearer to me than you, except Allah's Apostle's (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) soul and I owe some debt and you should repay it and treat your sisters favorably (nicely and politely)." So in the morning he was the first to be martyred and was buried along with another (martyr). I did not like to leave him with the other (martyr) so I took him out of the Grave after six months of his burial and he was in the same condition as he was on the day of burial, except a slight change near his ear. (Bukhari Book #23, Hadith #434).

3.

Narrated 'Urwa (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ): When the wall fell on them (i.e. on Graves) during the Caliphate of Al-Walid bin 'Abdul Malik, the people started repairing it, and a foot appeared to them. The people got scared and thought that it was the foot of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم). No one could be found who could tell them about it till I ('Urwa - رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ ) said to them, "By Allah, ( سبحانہ و تعا لی ) this is not the foot of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) but it is the foot of Umar (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ)." (Bukhari Book #23, Hadith #474).

A very recent event occurred on July 9, 2012 in Benghazi, Libya. When 'Sahaba Mosque' in Derna, Benghazi, Libya was bombed at 7 am local time, to destroy the Tomb of Sahabi-e-Rasool Hadhrat Zuhayr Ibn Qais Al-Balawi (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ). Hadhrat Zuhayr (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) was the commander of Arab Army who helped bring Islam to Libya during 63-69 H (683-89 AD).

The Bombing on the mosque destroyed the Tomb and the upper portion of Hadhrat Zuhayr (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) grave. People were surprised to see the pious body of Hadhrat Zuhayr (رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) remained intact, spotless after 1375 years.
